(Greek: archos, chief; diakonos, servant)
Formerly an important official who, in virtue of jurisdiction delegated by his bishop, administered part of a diocese; today his duties are performed by the vicar-general and vicars-forane (rural deans). In the Anglican Church the assistants of the bishops are still called archdeacons.
