Reigned from October 974 to the autumn of 983. Born in Rome, Italy; died there. He was bishop of Sutri, and when elected pope his authority was disputed by the antipope, Boniface Franco, and his followers. He was upheld, however, by the emperor, Otto II. He attempted to check simony, promoted monasticism, and appointed the first archbishop of Carthage.
