Last of the Schoolmen, born Ryckel, Limburg (now Belgium), 1402; died Roermond, Dutch Limburg, 1471. After studying at Zwolle and Cologne, he entered the Carthusian monastery of Roermond, where he acquired a reputation for great sanctity. Though not infrequently styled Blessed, the cause of his beatification has never begun. Denys was a prolific writer; his works form a complete summary of medieval scholastic teaching. He was, however, a compiler rather than an original thinker.
