Popular name in Great Britain for the Franciscan Friars because originally their habit was gray. At present they wear brown, except the Conventuals who have adopted black. The robes of Franciscan cardinals and the general of the Conventuals are also gray. Many urban districts in Great Britain, e.g., Edinburgh, are known as Grey Friars owing to the former location there of Franciscan monasteries.
