Catholic anatomist, born Modena, Italy, 1523; died Padua, Italy, 1562. He was professor of anatomy first at Ferrara and then at Pisa, and despite his early death left his mark on anatomy for all time. The tube leading from the ovary to the uterus, and the canal through which the facial nerve passes from the auditory, are both called by his name. His contributions to practical medicine are likewise important. Inaugurated many terms into anatomical nomenclature, among them cochlea, placenta, vagina, velum palati, etc.
