A vehicle for conveying the coffin, named from a wooden or metal framework for candles which formerly surmounted the bier and supported the pall, at funeral services, and is still in use at the funeral service of the pope.
The Tenebrae hearse is a triangular candlestick for fifteen candles; its use at Tenebrae dates from the 7th century, and the number of candles has varied at different times and places.
