Holy virgin. Born in 1586 in Lima, Peru; died there on August 24, 1617. She was the first American to be canonized. The name Rose was given to her because when an infant her face was said to have somewhat resembled a rose; from early youth she modeled her life of extreme penance and mortification on that of Saint Catherine of Siena. When her family suffered financial reverses, Rose helped to support them by her needlework, in which she excelled. In 1606 she became a Dominican tertiary. The cruel martyrdom which she inflicted upon her body was rewarded by extraordinary mystical gifts, visions, and revelations; many miracles followed her death. The collect of her Mass closes with the request that we may follow "in the good fragrance of Christ," alluding to her name as symbolic of the perfume of her virtue. Patroness of South America. Emblems: an anchor, crown of roses, city. Beatified on April 15, 1668; canonized on April 2, 1671. Buried at Lima. Feast, Roman Calendar, August 23,.
