The traditional title formerly used for collections of liturgical formula to be used by pastors in dispensing the sacraments and in performing other liturgical functions. Other titles for the same book are: Agenda; Manuale; Bacerdotale; Bacramentale. The Rituale Romanum, into which what still obtains from these books has been incorporated, has now been substituted for them. Zaccaria mentions six rituals with the title of Pastorale. In the Pastorale Mechliniense the title survived the longest and was in use until the acceptance of the Roman Ritual under Archbishop V. A. Dechamps (died as cardinal, 1883).
