Painter, born Paris, France, July 17, 1797; died there, November 4, 1856. The pupil of Baron Antoine Gros, he leaned rather to the Romantic than the Classic school. He is chiefly known as a popular historical painter. His "Death of Queen Elizabeth" and "Children of Edward IV in the Tower" are in the Louvre, and the "Death of the Duke of Guise" is in the Chantilly Museum. After the death of his wife, a daughter of Horace Vernet, he produced religious paintings of marked sincerity in feeling. These include "The Christian Martyr" of the Louvre, and a "Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane." His decoration for the hemicycle of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts included portraits of more than seventy artists.
