A solemn series of invocations in which are repeated the names of the canonized saints of the Church. The litany begins with the usual invocation of the Persons of the Blessed Trinity and the Blessed Virgin. Then come in order the invocation of the angels, apostles, patriarchs, martyrs, pontiffs, confessors, and virgins as well as the prayers of the Church for preservation from the evils of the world and of life, followed by the petitions for the preservation of the faith and the Church. There are at least three forms of the Litany of the Saints which are used at liturgical functions; the longer one, on the Rogation days; a somewhat shorter form on the Ember days and on Holy Saturday; and a still shorter form for the Litany of the Dying, or Litany for the Departing. This last, which appears in the Roman Ritual in its full form, scarcely fills a page. It is used at the approaching death of the Christian, and resignation to the Holy Will of God is the tenor of the prayers and ceremonies preceding and following it. In this litany are added the names of the hospitallers Saint Camillus of Lellis and Saint John of God, patrons of the dying.
