Naval officer. Born on September 27, 1809 in Charles County, Maryland; died on September 30, 1877 at Point Clear, Alabama. Served with distinction in the United States Navy while simultaneously studying law and being admitted to the bar. Appointed naval commander in the Confederate Navy at the outbreak of the Civil War, and attained the rank of rear-admiral in 1865. As captain of the "Alabama" he made the celebrated cruise which destroyed the Northern merchant marine, capturing 55 ships. After the war he taught literature and philosphy, practised law, and wrote good (but bitter) works on the Civil War. His political disabilities were never removed.
