Priest of the Roman Province of Africa, whose appeal to Rome from his bishop's sentence of excommunication for misconduct (c.418) led to a dispute between the African Church and the popes about the regulation of local discipline. This case has been made much of by opponents of papal supremacy; it was merely an expression of the desire of African bishops to retain privileges they had been allowed to assume during periods of persecution.
