Also known as the Daughters of Charity or Servants of the Poor, founded by Bishop Bourget with the co-operation of Mme J. B. Gamelin in Montreal in 1843 under the Rule of Saint Vincent de Paul, to be devoted exclusively to works of charity undertaken at the bidding of their diocesan bishop. There are no lay sisters. The congregation manages hospitals, orphan asylums, homes, and Indian missions, in the United States, Canada, and Alaska. The mother-house is at Montreal.
