Holman Bible Dictionary
(bee' ehr) Place name meaning, “well.” It frequently occurs in compound constructions of place names. For example, Beer-sheba means “well of seven.” The generally arid climate of much of Palestine made wells particularly significant locations. 1. One of the camps of the Israelites during the wilderness wandering (Numbers 21:16 ). 2 . Jotham fled to Beer when he feared his brother Abimelech would kill him (Judges 9:21 ). This may be modern Bireh.
