Fleshy, muscular folds surrounding the mouth. In the Old Testament, lips frequently take the character of the whole person. There are flattering and lying lips (Psalm 12:2 ; Psalm 31:18 ); joyful lips (Psalm 63:5 ); righteous lips (Proverbs 16:13 ); fearful lips (Habakkuk 3:16 ). Uncircumcised lips (Exodus 6:12 ) most likely refer to stammering lips or lack of fluency in speech (Exodus 4:10 ). Mourning is expressed in part by covering the upper lip with one's hand (Leviticus 13:45 ).
