Mitre

Holman Bible Dictionary

KJV term for a type of headdress, probably a turban (compare the related verb at Isaiah 22:18 ). The mitre formed part of the high priest's garments (Exodus 28:4 ,Exodus 28:4,28:36-39 ) and was required dress on the day of atonement (Leviticus 16:4 ). Priests were prohibited from showing signs of mourning such as dishevelled hair (Ezekiel 24:17; Leviticus 21:10 ). They perhaps wore turbans whenever they went out. In Zechariah 3:5 the high priest Joshua received a clean mitre as a sign of the restoration of the priesthood.
