Coarse plants with stinging hairs belonging to the family Urtica ; generally, any prickly or stinging plant (Job 30:7 ; Proverbs 24:31 ; Isaiah 34:13 ; Hosea 9:6 ; Zephaniah 2:9 ). NIV frequently replaced nettles with undergrowth, weeds, or briers. The Hebrew term used at Job 30:7 and Zephaniah 2:9 perhaps refers to wild mustard. Nettles are used as a sign of desolation and judgment.
