There are two Hebrew words thus translated in the Auth. Vers., which it may be well to distinguish.

Yathed, which usually denotes a peg, pin, or nail, as driven into a wall (; ); and more especially a tent-pin driven into the earth to fasten the tent (;;;;; ).

Mismeroth, which, with some variations of form, is applied to ordinary and ornamental nails. It always occurs in the plural, and is the word which we find in , :;; . The last of these texts involves a very significant proverbial application—'The words of the wise are as nails infixed,' etc.
