Capital of the department of Ariège, France. In the Middle Ages there were Jews here as well as in other towns in the county of Foix, especially at Saverdun and Pamiers. The largest Jewish community in the district was at Pamiers, which, toward the end of the thirteenth century, through Gaston de Foix and the Abbot of St. Antonin, enjoyed special exemptions in the matter of taxation. The community at Foix seems to have been less important, for only two of its members are known, Cresques and David Solomon, both of whom lived at Perpignan about 1413.
