Cashmore, Michael

The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia

Australian communal worker; born in 1814; died at South Melbourne Oct. 17, 1886. He was one of the oldest colonists in Victoria, having arrived in Melbourne in 1838, after a stay of two years at Sydney. Cashmore was president of the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation and one of the trustees of the Bourke street synagogue. He was the first Jewish member of the city council, and the first Jewish magistrate appointed in the colony. For seventeen years he held the position of inspector of meat markets.
