1. struggle against, prove a match for, τινί, esp. in war, Hdt. 5.109, Th. 6.72, X. Cyr. 1.6.8, etc.; ἀ. ταῖς παρασκεναῖς τινός D. 43.81; πρὸς τοὺς βαρβάρους Inscr.Prien. 17.15, cf. Hebrews 12:4.

2. generally, struggle, vie with, τινί Th. 3.38; περί τινος And. 4.2; οἱ ἀνταγωνιζόμενοί τι the parties in a lawsuit, X. Cyr. 8.2.27; [ οἱ ἐλευθέριοι] οὐκ ἀ. περὶ τῶν χρημάτων Arist. Rh. 1366b8.

3. act a part in rivalry with, τινί Plu. Dem. 29.

For the derived noun cf. P Oxy III. 519.21 (ii/A.D.) . . . ]ανωνι ἀνταγ (ωνιστῇ) (δραχμαὶ) [. . , in a list of payments to gymnastic performers. The verb construed with πρός, as in Hebrews 12:4, occurs in Priene 17.15 (soon after B.C. 278) πρὸς τοὺς βαρβάρους ἀνταγωνίζεσθαι.
