4. abs., serve, be subordinate, opp. προστάττω, Arist. Top. 129a13; ἡ ὑπηρετοῦσα ἐπιστήμη Id. Metaph. 982b5: c. neut. pl. of Adj., etc., τὰ λοίφ' ὑ. help in what remains to be done, S. Ph. 15; ὑ. τὰ περὶ τὸν πόλεμον Pl. R. 467a; and with cogn. acc., ὑ. τὰς διακονικὰς πράξεις Arist. Pol. 1277a36: Pass., to be done as service, τὰ ἀπ' ἡμέων ἐς ὑμέας ὑπηρετέεται Hdt. 4.139; χρὴ σὴ τό γε ἐμὸν ὑπηρετέεσθαι that my service should be rendered, Id. 1.108; ἢν τὰ παρ' ὑμῶν ὑπηρετῆται Isoc. 3.63; τὸ πρᾶγμα τὸ ὑπηρετηθέν Arist. EE 1243a16, cf. X. HG 5.2.34. The Med. occurs in late texts, as Hld. 7.19, al., and Alciphr. 1.11, dub. in Supp.Epigr. 1.327.19 (Callatis, i A. D.); τὸ -ούμενον the retinue, Memn. 2.4; fut. -ήσομαι POxy. 58.24 (iii A. D.); but in S. El. 1306, ὑπηρετοίην was rightly restored by Musgrave and Elmsl. for -οίμην.

ὑπηρετέω, ὑπηρέτω; 1 aorist ὑπηρέτησα; from Herodotus down; to be ὑπηρέτης (which see), properly,

a. to act as rower, to row, (Diodorus, Aelian).

b. to minister, render service: τίνι, Acts 13:36; Acts 20:34; Acts 24:23.

[in LXX: Wisdom of Solomon 16:21; Wisdom of Solomon 16:24-25; Wisdom of Solomon 19:6, Sirach 39:4 *;] prop., to serve as rower on a ship (Diod., al.). In cl. always metaph., to minister to, serve: c. dat. pers., Acts 13:36; Acts 20:34; Acts 24:23.†

1. ";loss"; : P Tebt I. 105.3 (B.C. 103) ἀνὑπόλογον᾽ πἅσης᾽ φθὁρᾶς, ";subject to no deduction for loss,"; with reference to a lease of land, and P Strass I. 24.26 (A.D. 118) (γίγνονται) φθοπᾶς ε ̄ ";total, 5 by death,"; with reference to the death of cattle. In Syll 316 (=.3 684).7 (B.C. 139?) the noun is united with ἔμπργσιςλέγω δέὑπὲρ τῆς ἐμπρησεως καὶφθορᾶς τῶνἀρχεἴων καὶ τῶν δγμοσίων γραμματων.

2. ";corruption,"; ";decay"; : Priene 105.2 (c. B.C. 9), where it is stated that the world would have suffered speedy φθοράν, had it not been for the birth of Augustus : cf. Rom. 8:21.

The word is used of ";abortion"; in Syll 633 (=.3 1042).7 (ii/A.D.); see the editor’s note with its references to Ps. Pauli Apoc. 60 αὗταλί εἰσιν αἱ φθεὶρασαι ἑαυτάς καὶ τὰβρέφγ αὐτῶν ἀποκτείνασαι, and to ἀπὸ φθορελων in Syll 567 (=.3983).12 (ii/A.D.)
