I Plb. 18.30.3: mostly in Med., fut. -ιοῦμαι J. BJ 2.21.4, but -ίσομαι Id. AJ 13.5.11, and so D.S. 20.24: pf. ἠσφάλισμαι Plb. 5.43.6: plpf. ἠσφάλιστο ib. 7.12: aor. ἠσφαλισάμην Id. 2.22.11; ἠσφαλίσθην J. Vit. 62: some of these tenses are used in pass. sense (v. infr.):

1. fortify, τὸν τόπον Plb. 18.30.3, etc.: Pass., Id. 1.42.7, 4.70.9, Matthew 27:64. secure, BGU 829.9 (i A. D.).

2. more freq. in Med., secure, ἑαυτόν Epicur. Fr. 215; τὰς εἰσβολάς, τὴν χώραν, etc., Plb. 2.65.6, 4.60.5, etc.; τόπους Hero Bel. 101.7; τὸν ὕσπληγγα CIG 2824 (Aphrodisias); shut up, close, πύλην LXX Nehemiah 3:15; ὀφθαλμοὶ ἠσφαλισμένοι, opp. ἀνεῳγμένοι, Polem.Phgn. 55; τοὺς πόδας ἠσφαλίσατο εἰς τὸ ξύλον made them fast, Acts 16:24.

3. secure the person of, arrest, τινά PTeb. 283.19 (i B.C.), cf. PRyl. 68.19 (i B.C., Pass.); seize, τὰ γενήματα ib. 53.29 (ii B.C.).

4. Med., certify, ib. 2.77.40 (ii A.D.).

II Med.,

1. secure oneself against, ward off, τὰς καταφορὰς τῶν μαχαιρῶν Plb. 6.23.4, cf. 9.3.3: abs., safeguard oneself, J. AJ 13.5.10, POxy. 1033.13 (iv A. D.).

2. metaph. in Rhet., safeguard a risky metaphor, ἀ. τὰς μεταφοράς Demetr. Eloc. 85: Pass., λέξις ἠσφαλισμένη τοῖς συνδέσμοις ib. 193. (The word is βάρβαρον acc. to AB 456.)

ἀσφαλίζω: 1 aorist passive infinitive ἀσφαλισθῆναι; 1 aorist middle ἠσφαλισάμην; (ἀσφαλής); especially frequent from Polybius down; "to make firm: to make secure against harm; passive to be made secure": Matthew 27:64 ( τάφος) (Buttmann, 52 (46)); middle, properly, to make secure for oneself or for one's own advantage (often in Polybius): Matthew 27:65f; to make fast τούς πόδας εἰς τό ξύλον, Acts 16:24 (Winers Grammar, § 66, 2 d.; Buttmann, § 147, 8).

For the physical meaning of this very common verb, the only meaning which occurs in NT, may be quoted P Ryl II. 68.19 (B.C. 89) ὅπως ἀναχθεῖσα ἡ Τ . ἀσφαλισθῆι μ ̣ε ̣χ ̣ρ ̣ι ̣ τοῦ κτλ ., ";be brought up and secured until . . . "; (Ed.), P Tebt II. 283.19 (i/B.C.) τὸν προγεγραμμένον Π . ἀσφαλίσασθαι , ";to secure (arrest) the aforesaid P.,"; ib. I. 53.29 (B.C. 110) ἀσφαλίσασθαι τὰ γενή (ματα ), ";seize the produce"; (Edd.). Ib. II. 407.4 (A.D.199?) ἀσφαλιζόμενος τὰ μέλ ̣λ ̣[ο ]ντα πρὸς ἐμ ̣[ὲ ἐλθεῖν ὑπάρχο ]ν ̣τα , ";securing the property coming to me"; (Edd.) has the commoner applied sense : cf. also P Oxy VII. 1033.13 (A.D. 392) διὰ τοῦτο ἑαυτοὺς ἀσφαλισζόμενοι τούσδε τοὺς λιβέλλους ἐπιδίδομεν , ";therefore to safeguard ourselves we present this petition"; (Ed.), P Lips I. 106.10 ff. (A.D. 98) ἐὰν οὖν ὅ γε γνώσ ̣της σὺν τῷ μετόχῳ ἀσφαλίζηταί σε διὰ τοῦ γράμματεος (l. τος ) τῶν γεωργῶ (ν ). Add P Ryl II. 77.40 (A.D. 192) αὐτὰ ταῦτα ἀσφαλίσομαι κτλ ., ";I will certify these very facts by means of your minutes (Ed.), BGU III. 829.9 (A.D. 100) ἀσφ [άλισο ]ν δὲ τ [ ]ν ἐ [μὴ ]ν ὑπογραφήν , P Hamb I. 29.12 (A.D. 29), where the editors take it as ";enter a protest."; Demetrius de Eloc. 193 says the best ";literary"; style is συνηρτημένη καὶ οἷον ἠσφαλισμένη τοῖς συνδεσμοῖς , ";compacted and (as it were) consolidated by the conjunctions"; (Roberts). Ἀσφάλισμα ";pledge"; occurs BGU I. 248.8, II. 601.7 (?) (both ii/A.D.) : cf. also ib. I. 246.14 (ii/iii A.D.) [π ]αρασφαλίσματα . Cf. MGr ( )σφαλίζω ";shut.";
