Combined these mean "a gathering of seeds". A garden is a place for growing crops and is often surrounded by a rock wall or hedge to protect it from grazing animals. גָּנַן (kindred to כָּנַן, עָנַן), prop. to cover, to cover over, i.q. Arabic جَنَّ, figuratively, to protect; always used of God as protecting men, followed by עַל, like verbs of covering (see עַל No. 2, ). 2 Kings 20:6, וְגַנּוֹתִי עַל־הָעִיד הַזֹּאת “and I will protect this city.” Isaiah 37:35, 38:6 אֶל 2 Kings 19:34. Pret. גַּנּוֹתִי; inf. absol. גָּנוֹן Isaiah 31:5.
