Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

דָּבַב Arab. دَبَّ

(1) pr. to go slowly and gently, to creep; an onomatopoetic root, like the German tappen, French tapper. Nearly connected is טָפַף, used of a gentle but quick progress, such as in German is expressed by the diminutive verb trippeln; compare further נָתַב whence נָתִיב, Gr. στείβω. Elsewhere in the signification of treading, the Phœnicio-Shemitic languages commonly use transp. pat, see the root בּוּס. Hence דֹּב a bear.

(2) to creep about, used of a slanderer, hence simply to slander, whence דִּבָּה; compare רָגַל and הָלַךְ רָבִיל.

(3) of liquids, to flow gently, as of wine, Song of Solomon 7:10. Comp. as to this passage under the root יָשֵׁן.

[Derivatives (as given above), דֹּב and דִּבָּה.]

[“דָּבָה an unused root. Hence דִּבְיֹונִים.”]
