חֶרְמוֹן (i.q. خَرْمُ, خُرْمُ prominent summit of a mountain; properly it seems the nose of a mountain; compare أَنْفُ), Hermon, a spur of Antilibanus, Joshua 11:3, 17 Joshua 11:17; Psalms 89:13, 133:3 near the spring of the Jordan; now called Jebel esh-Sheikh (ااشيخ جبل) and towards the south Jebel el-Heish; it consists of several mountains, and is therefore spoken of in the pl. חֶרְמֹנִים Psalms 42:7. We learn from Deuteronomy 3:9, 4:48, that these mountains were called by the Amorites שְׂנִיר, by the Sidonians שִׁרְיוֹן; and they were also sometimes called שִׂיאֹן; but 1 Chronicles 5:23, Senir and Sirion are distinguished from one another. The names applied to the mountains of this region appear sometimes to have been used in a wider, sometimes in a narrower, sense.
