סֹלֶת f. (but masc. Exodus 29:40) very fine flour, or meal, Ezekiel 16:13, 19 Ezekiel 16:19; 1 Chronicles 9:29; Genesis 18:6. סֹלֶת חִטִּים wheat flour, Exodus 29:2. (Ch. סוּלְתָּא id., Arab. سُلْتُ peeled barley, pearl barley, ἄλφιτα, compare the verb סַלֵּת to sift flour in a sieve). The etymology is doubtful; for the verb סַלֵּת appears to be secondary, and taken from the noun סֹלֶל. I expect that the primary radical was סָלַל, in the sense of shaking, and especially of sifting, i.q. זָלַל; whence סֹל fem. סֹלֶת (as to which flection compare דַּל fem. דֶּלֶת, from the root דָּלַל, קַשְׂקַשִּׂים and קַשְׂקֶשֶּׂת Lehrg. p. 590). The ancients themselves appear to have been undecided as to the origin of this word, and thus it was sometimes masc., sometimes fem. [In Thes. Gesenius derives it from the unused root סָלַת, سلت]
