Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition
עַקְרָב pl. עַקְרַבִּים m.
(1) a scorpion, Ezekiel 2:6. (Arab. عَقْرَ بُ id. To this corresponds the Greek σκόρπιος, the breathing being changed into sibilant; compare עָקַל σκόλιος.) It appears to be blended from עָקַר, عقر to wound, and עָקֵב the heel. See also מַעֲלֵה־עַקְרַבִּים
(2) a kind of scourge, furnished with sharp points, 1 Kings 12:11, 14 1 Kings 12:14; 2 Chronicles 10:11, 14 2 Chronicles 10:14. So in Lat. scorpio, according to Isidore (Origg. v. 27), is virga nodosa et aculeata.
