Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

קַרְדֹּם m. an axe, with suff. קַרְדֻּמּוֹ 1 Samuel 13:20 pl. קַרְדֻּמִּים 1 Samuel 13:21, and קַרְדֻּמּוֹת Psalms 74:5; Jeremiah 46:22 also קַרְדֻּמוֹת (without Dag.) Judges 9:48. (Arab. قَدُّومُ, Talmud קורדום id. I suppose the Hebrew קַרְדֹּם to be from the verbal Piel קַדֹּם, قَدُّومُ the letter ר being inserted (see ), from קָדַם in the primary signification of being sharp; compare גָּזַם, קָסַם. Another and softer form of this same word appears to be גַּרְזֶן, where compare the Arabic forms.)
