קָדַם not used in Kal, Arab. قدم to precede, to go before, Med. Damma, to precede in time, to be ancient.
Piel קִדֵּם
(1) to precede, to go before, Psalms 68:26. Followed by an acc. of pers. Psalms 89:15. (Arab. قَدَمَ id.)
(2) to get before, come before any one (φθάνειν), followed by an accusative, Psalms 17:13, 119:148, קִדְּמוּ עֵינַי אַשְׁמֻרוֹת “my eyes get before the watches of the night,” i.e. I wake up before the watches of the night are gone. Absol. Jonah 4:2, “thus קִדַּמְתִּי לִבְרֹחַ I anticipated (the danger which threatens me) by fleeing to Tarshish.” Hence to do before (Arab. قَدَمَ), and to do early, in the morning (Chald. קַדֵּם, ܩܰܕܶܡ for the Heb. חִשְׁכִּים). Psalms 119:147, קִדַּמְתִּי בַנֶּשֶׁף “I rise in the morning with the dawn.” Others take it, I anticipate in the dawn, sc. the dawn itself; but this is rather harsh. Hence
(3) to rush on, suddenly and unexpectedly, Psalms 18:6, 19 Psalms 18:19.
(4) to meet, to go to meet any one, followed by an acc. of pers., especially to bring aid, i.q. to succour, Psalms 59:11, 79:8 Job 3:12 differently, Isaiah 37:33, לֹא יְקַדְּמֶנָּה מָגֵן “a shield shall not come against it” (the city), it shall not be turned against it. Job 30:27. Followed by בְּ of the thing, to bring any thing to meet any one, Psalms 95:2 hence to succour any one with any thing (see בּ C, 1, ), Deuteronomy 23:5; Micah 6:6; Nehemiah 13:2 followed by two acc. Psalms 21:4.
Hiphil
(1) to come before any one in good offices, to make any one a debtor by being before-hand in kindness with him (compare قِدَمُ used of such a kindness, see Schult. on Job, p.1183), Job 41:3.
(2) i.q. Pi. No. 3, to fall upon (as calamity), Amos 9:10 followed by בְּעַד.
