Hiphil הִשְׁכִּים
(1) to rise early in the morning, either with addition of בַּבֹּקֶר Genesis 19:27, 20:8 28:18 32:1 or without it, Genesis 19:2; Exodus 32:6; Joshua 8:14. (Pr. perhaps to put a load on camels and other beasts, which nomadic tribes do very early in the morning, denom. from שְׁכֶם, Eth. ሰከመ፡ to put a load on the shoulders, Matthew 23:4 comp. Ch. שְׁרָא, καταλύω.) Followed by לְּ to get up early to any place, Song of Solomon 7:13. When joined with another verb it is for the adv. early. Hosea 6:4, טַל מַשְׁכִּים הֹלֵךְ “the dew disappearing early.” Hosea 13:3. Hence inf. absol. הַשְׁכֵּם adv. early. Proverbs 27:14.
(2) figuratively, to do earnestly, or urgently. Jeremiah 7:13, אֲדַבֵּר אֲלֵיכֶם הַשְׁכֵּם וְדַבֵּר “I have spoken to you earnestly.” Jeremiah 11:7,-וְהָעֵד כִּי הָעֵד הֲעִידֹתִי הַשְׁכֵּם “for I have most earnestly testified;” 7:25 25:3 26:5 32:33 35:14, 15 Jeremiah 35:15, 44:4 2 Chronicles 36:15; Zephaniah 3:7, הִשְׁכִּימוּ הִשְׁחִיתוּ עֲלִילוֹתָם “they earnestly acted wickedly.” Once inf. in the Ch. form אַשְׁכֵּם for הַשְׁכֵּם Jeremiah 25:3.
