Thayer's Expanded Definition

λικμάω, λικμῷ: future λικμήσω; (λιμός a winnowing-van);

1. to winnow, cleanse away the chaff from grain by winnowing (Homer, Xenophon, Plutarch, others; the Sept.).

2. in a sense unknown to secular authors, to scatter (opposed to συνάγω, Jeremiah 31:10 (or Jeremiah 38); add, Isaiah 17:13; Amos 9:9).

3. to crush to pieces, grind to powder: τινα, Matthew 21:44 (R G L brackets WH brackets); Luke 20:18; cf. Daniel 2:44 (Theod.); Wis. 11:19 (18). (But in Daniel, the passage cited it represents the Aphel of סוּף,finem facere, and on Sap. l. c. see Grimm. Many decline to follow the rendering of the Vulg. (conterere, comminuere), but refer the examples under this head to the preceding.)

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For λικμάω in its original sense of ";winnow"; (as in LXX Ruth 3:2, Sirach 5:9) we may cite PSI V. 522.2 (B.C. 248–7) ὁ δ [ὲ ὄ ]ροβος ἄρτι ἐλικμᾶτο, BGU IV. 1040.11 (ii/A.D.) [πεὶ ] ἤμελλεν λικμᾶν, P Ryl II. 442.3 (iii/A.D.) ἐὰν λικμήσωσι τὴν ἁλωνίαν, τὰ α ̣̀χυ ̣ρ ̣α ̣ γεμίσονται. . . Cf. λικμάζω in P Oxy XII. 1482.3 (ii/A.D.) λελικμήκαμεν τὴν κριθήν. Many find the other LXX usage= ";scatter"; (Isaiah 17:13 al.) in the two NT passages where the verb occurs (Matthew 21:44, Luke 20:18) : see e.g. Kennedy Sources, p. 126 f. On the other hand, Deissmann (BS, p. 225 f.) defends the AV translation ";crush,"; ";grind to powder"; (following the Vulgate conterere, comminuere) on the evidence of BGU I. 146.8 (ii/iii A.D.), a complaint against certain men who—ἐλίκμησάν μου τὸ λάχανον, ";had stamped, ruined, my λάχανον."; Boll (Offenbarung, p. 130 n..1) supplies further profane evidence in the same direction from Lyd. p. 53, 13 λικμητὸν ἀνθρώποις ἀπειλεῖ, where λικμητός has the meaning of ἀπώλεια.
