1. poet. ἀνσπ-, draw, pull up, σπυρίδα Hdt. 5.16, cf. 4.154; βύβλον ἐκ τῶν ἑλέων Id. 2.92: Pass., BGU 1041.8 (iii A.D.). draw a ship up on land, Pi. P. 4.27, Hdt. 7.188, Th. 4.9.

2. draw, suck up greedily, ὅταν αἷμ' ἀνασπάσῃ κόνις A. Eu. 647; ἀ. ὑγρόν Hp. VM 22; ἀ. ποτόν, τροφήν, Arist. HA 495a26, PA 661a19; ὕδωρ ἀ. draw water, Th. 4.97.

3. draw back, τὴν χεῖρα Ar. Pl. 691: so in Med., ἐκ χροὸς ἔγχος ἀνεσπάσατ' Il. 13.574.

4. tear up, pull down, τὰ ἀγάλματα ἐκ τῶν βάθρων Hdt. 5.86; τὴν σκηνήν Id. 7.119; τὸ σταύρωμα Th. 6.100; τύμβους E. Med. 1381, cf. Ba. 949; δένδρα Arist. HA 497b29,al.; τὰς σανιδας τῆς γεφύρας Plb. 2.5.5; πυλίδας Id. 5.39.4, etc.

5. metaph., ἀνασπᾶν λόγους, in S. Aj. 302, draw forth words, utter wild, incoherent words; ἀνασπῶντ' αὐτοπρέμνοις τοῖς λόγοισιν Ar. Ra. 903: the phrase may be expl. from Pl. Tht. 180a (ὥσπερ ἐκ φαρέτρας ῥηματίσκια.. ἀνασπῶντες) and Men. 429 (πόθεν.. τούτους ἀνεσπάκασιν οὗτοι τοὺς λόγους;); so ἀ. γνωμίδιον Ar. Fr. 49D.

6. τὰς ὀφρῦς ἀνασπᾶν pucker the eyebrows, and so put on a grave important air, τὰς ὀφρῦς ἀνεσπακὼς ὥσπερ τι δεινὸν ἀγγελῶν Id. Ach. 1069, cf. Alex. 16, D. 19.314; ἔβλεψε νᾶπυ καὶ τὰ μέτωπ' ἀνέσπασεν Ar. Eq. 631; μέχρι νεφέων τὴν ὀφρὺν ἀ. Philem. 174, cf. X. Smp. 3.10; οἱ τὰς ὀφρῦς ἀνεσπασμένοι πρὸς τὸν κρόταφον Arist. Phgn. 812b27.

In P Tebt II. 420.25 (iii/A.D.) ἀνασπασθῇ is used with regard to the ";pulling up"; (?) of barley, with which the editors compare BGU III. 1041.8 (ii/A.D.) ἔτι δὲ καὶ ἀνεσπάσθη σου ἡ κριθὴ ἀρτ [ ]β [αι ] ι ̄ε ̄ : we may add P Flor II. 235.5 (A.D. 266) ἀνασπῶντι πυρόν.
