לַעֲנָה fem. wormwood, Jeremiah 9:14, 23:15 Lamentations 3:15, 19 Proverbs 5:4 this herb is perhaps so called as being noxious (see the root) and poisonous (comp. Deuteronomy 29:17; Revelation 8:10, 11 ); as bitter herbs were commonly so regarded by the Hebrews (compare Hebrews 12:13).
