Brown-Driver-Briggs Expanded Definition
מְאֹד noun masculine muchness, force, abundance, exceedingly (compare Assyrian mu'du, abundance, Hom ZMG 1878,711 ('treasures ana mu'di, in abundance') Dl HWB 399): —

1 force, might, Deuteronomy 6:5 וּבְכָלמְֿאֹדֶ֑ךָ and with all thy might; hence 2 Kings 23:25.

2 in different idioms (298t.) to express the idea of exceedingly, greatly, very (whether of magnitude or degree):

a. (so mostly) as adverb accusative, qualifying both adjectives and obs., Genesis 1:31 טוֺב מְאֹד good exceedingly, Genesis 4:5 וַיִּחַד לְקַיִן מְאֹד and Cain was wroth exceedingly, Genesis 7:18 מְאֹדוַיִּרְבּוּ הַמַּיִםוַיִּגְבְּרוּ, Genesis 12:14; Genesis 13:2 בַּמִּקְנֶהמְאֹד כָּבֵדוְאַבְרָם, Genesis 13:13 מאד׳חַטָּאִים לי, Genesis 18:20; Genesis 19:3,9; Genesis 21:11; Genesis 24:16,35, + often, Psalm 46:2 נִמְצָא מְאֹד עֶזְרָה בְצָרוֺת as a help in troubles, to be found (= present) exceedingly; with an infinitive Isaiah 47:9 בְּעָצְמַת חֲבָרַיִח מְאֹד despite of thy spells being very numerous, Joshua 9:13 מֵרֹב הַדֶּרֶךְ מְאֹד, 1 Kings 7:47; הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד Genesis 15:1; Genesis 41:49; Deuteronomy 3:5 +, for which in the later language is found לָרֹב מְאֹד Zechariah 14:14; 2 Chronicles 4:18; 9:9 (in 1 Kings 10:10 הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד); 2 Chronicles 24:24; 30:13, and even לְהַרְבֵּה מְאֹד 2 Chronicles 11:12; 16:8. מְאֹד is not usually separated from the word it qualifies by more than one or two words (as Genesis 20:8 האנשׁים מאד וייראו, Numbers 11:10 מאד׳ויחר אף י); see, however, Deuteronomy 30:14; Judges 12:2; 2 Samuel 12:5; 1 Kings 11:19; Psalm 31:12. It precedes its verb, Psalm 47:10 מְאֹד נַעֲלָה (hence Psalm 97:9), Psalm 92:6.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

מְאֹד

(1) subst. m. strength, force, from the root אוּד No. 3. Deuteronomy 6:5, “and thou shalt love Jehovah thy God with all thy heart, with all thy mind, וּבְכֹל מְאֹדֶךָ and with all thy strength,” i.e. in the highest degree; 2 Kings 23:25 (compare Luke 10:27). Isaiah 47:9, בְּעָצְמַת חֲבָרַיִךְ מְאֹד “with (i.e. notwithstanding) the great might of thy sorceries,” where we must join עָצְמַת מְאֹד; Job 35:15. Hence

(a) בִּמְאֹד מְאֹד with force of force, i.e. most forcibly, most violently, Genesis 17:2, Genesis 17:6, 20 Genesis 17:20; Ezekiel 9:9.

(b) עַד מְאֹד even to force, i.e. in a very great degree; very, Genesis 27:33; 1 Kings 1:4; Daniel 8:8 quite, altogether, Psalms 119:8 too much, Isaiah 64:8.

(c) עַד לִמְאֹד, i.q. עַד מְאֹד but in the later Hebrew, 2 Chronicles 16:14.

(2) adv.

(a) very, exceedingly, greatly, added to adjectives and verbs, as טוֹב מְאֹד Genesis 1:31 מְאֹד יָפָה 12:14 הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד 15:1. Emphatically doubled מְאֹד מְאֹד Genesis 7:19; Numbers 14:7.- Psalms 46:2, עֶזְרָה בְעָרוֹת נִמְצָא מְאֹד “(he is) an aid in distresses to be found greatly,” i.e. he is found a strong aid.

(b) quickly, hastily, which is also connected with exertion of strength (compare Germ. bald, from the Lat. valde, and the Lower Germ. fwieth, Anglo-Sax. swithe, very, Germ. gefchwind), 1 Samuel 20:19, תֵּרֵד מְאֹד “go down quickly.” Vulg. festinus.
