"The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, The one who lives in the clefts of the rock, On the height of his dwelling place, Who says in his heart, 'Who will bring me down to earth?'

"Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and cry out against it, because their wickedness has come up before Me."

And he said to them, "Pick me up and hurl me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm for you, because I know that on account of me this great storm has come upon you."

and he said, "I called out of my distress to the LORD, And He answered me. I called for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice.

"For You threw me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the current flowed around me. All Your breakers and waves passed over me.

"Water encompassed me to the point of death. The deep flowed around me, Seaweed was wrapped around my head.

"I descended to the base of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, LORD my God.

"So now, LORD, please take my life from me, for death is better to me than life."

And when the sun came up God designated a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah's head so that he became faint, and he begged with all his soul to die, saying, "Death is better to me than life!"

"On that day they will take up against you a song of mocking And utter a song of mourning and say, 'We are completely destroyed! He exchanges the share of my people; How He removes it from me! To the apostate He apportions our fields.'

"But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will come forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His times of coming forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity."

"My people, what have I done to you, And how have I wearied you? Answer Me.

Woe to me! For I am Like harvests of summer fruit, like gleanings of grapes. There is not a cluster of grapes left to eat, Nor an early fig, which I crave.

But as for me, I will be on the watch for the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me.

Do not rejoice over me, enemy of mine. Though I fall I will rise; Though I live in darkness, the LORD is a light for me.

I will endure the rage of the LORD Because I have sinned against Him, Until He pleads my case and executes justice for me. He will bring me out to the light, And I will look at His righteousness.

Then my enemy will see, And shame will cover her who said to me, "Where is the LORD your God?" My eyes will look at her; At that time she will be trampled down Like mud of the streets.

Why do You make me see disaster, And make me look at destitution? Yes, devastation and violence are before me; Strife exists and contention arises.

I will stand at my guard post And station myself on the watchtower; And I will keep watch to see what He will say to me, And how I may reply when I am reprimanded.

Then the LORD answered me and said, "Write down the vision And inscribe it clearly on tablets, So that one who reads it may run.
