After supper he took another cup of wine and said, "This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.

He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.

And one of them struck at the high priest's slave, slashing off his right ear.

Then they became insistent. "But he is causing riots by his teaching wherever he goes—all over Judea, from Galilee to Jerusalem!"

Then Herod and his soldiers began mocking and ridiculing Jesus. Finally, they put a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.

and he announced his verdict. "You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a revolt. I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent.

When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left.

Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing." And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.

Then Jesus shouted, "Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!" And with those words he breathed his last.

As his body was taken away, the women from Galilee followed and saw the tomb where his body was placed.

Then they went home and prepared spices and ointments to anoint his body. But by the time they were finished the Sabbath had begun, so they rested as required by the law.

So they rushed back from the tomb to tell his eleven disciples—and everyone else—what had happened.

"Then some women from our group of his followers were at his tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing report.

They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels who told them Jesus is alive!

Some of our men ran out to see, and sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said."

Wasn't it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?"

As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet.

It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.'

Then Jesus led them to Bethany, and lifting his hands to heaven, he blessed them.

The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.
