So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD had told him. But because he was too afraid of his father's household and the men of the city, he did it by night rather than in the daytime.

But Joash said to all who stood against him, "Are you contending for Baal? Are you trying to save him? Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If Baal is a god, let him contend for himself if someone has torn down his altar."

Then the LORD said to Gideon, "With the three hundred men who lapped the water I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hands. But all the others are to go home."

So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred men, who took charge of the provisions and trumpets of the others. And the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley.
