When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he disguised himself to them and spoke to them harshly. He said to them, "Where have you come from?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan, to buy food."

Now the men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph's house; and they said, "It is because of the money that was returned in our sacks the first time that we are being brought in, so that he may attack us and overpower us, and take us as slaves with our donkeys."

When Joseph came home, they brought into the house to him the gift which was in their hand, and they bowed down to the ground before him.

They had just left the city, and were not far away, when Joseph said to his house steward, "Up, follow the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, 'Why have you repaid evil for good?

And they said to him, "Why does my lord say such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing!

Then they hurried, each man lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack.
