Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind and said,
Job 38:1
Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
"Who is this who darkens the divine plan By words without knowledge?
Job 38:2
Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
"Now tighten the belt on your waist like a man, And I shall ask you, and you inform Me!
Job 38:3
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
"Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding,
Job 38:4
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
Who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the measuring line over it?
Job 38:5
Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
"On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone,
Job 38:6
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
When the morning stars sang together And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Job 38:7
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
"Or who enclosed the sea with doors When it went out from the womb, bursting forth;
Job 38:8
Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
When I made a cloud its garment, And thick darkness its swaddling bands,
Job 38:9
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
And I placed boundaries on it And set a bolt and doors,
Job 38:10
And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
And I said, 'As far as this point you shall come, but no farther; And here your proud waves shall stop'?
Job 38:11
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
"Have you ever in your life commanded the morning, And made the dawn know its place,
Job 38:12
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
So that it would take hold of the ends of the earth, And the wicked would be shaken off from it?
Job 38:13
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
"It is changed like clay under the seal; And they stand out like a garment.
Job 38:14
It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
"Their light is withheld from the wicked, And the uplifted arm is broken.
Job 38:15
And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.
"Have you entered the springs of the sea, And walked in the depth of the ocean?
Job 38:16
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
"Have the gates of death been revealed to you, And have you seen the gates of deep darkness?
Job 38:17
Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
"Have you understood the expanse of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this.
Job 38:18
Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
"Where is the way to the dwelling of light? And darkness, where is its place,
Job 38:19
Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
That you would take it to its territory, And discern the paths to its home?
Job 38:20
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
"You know, for you were born then, And the number of your days is great!
Job 38:21
Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?
"Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, And have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
Job 38:22
Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,
Which I have reserved for a time of distress, For a day of war and battle?
Job 38:23
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
"Where is the way that the light is divided, And the east wind scattered on the earth?
Job 38:24
By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
"Who has split open a channel for the flood, And a way for the thunderbolt,
Job 38:25
Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
To bring rain on a land without people, On a desert without a person in it,
Job 38:26
To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
To satisfy the waste and desolate land, And to make the seeds of grass to sprout?
Job 38:27
To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
"Does the rain have a father? Or who has fathered the drops of dew?
Job 38:28
Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
"From whose womb has come the ice? And the frost of heaven, who has given it birth?
Job 38:29
Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
"Water becomes hard like stone, And the surface of the deep is imprisoned.
Job 38:30
The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
"Can you tie up the chains of the Pleiades, Or untie the cords of Orion?
Job 38:31
Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
"Can you bring out a constellation in its season, And guide the Bear with her satellites?
Job 38:32
Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
"Do you know the ordinances of the heavens, Or do you establish their rule over the earth?
Job 38:33
Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
"Can you raise your voice to the clouds, So that an abundance of water will cover you?
Job 38:34
Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
"Can you send flashes of lightning, so that they may go And say to you, 'Here we are'?
Job 38:35
Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are?
"Who has put wisdom in the innermost being, Or given understanding to the mind?
Job 38:36
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
"Who can count the clouds by wisdom, And pour out the water jars of the heavens,
Job 38:37
Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
When the dust hardens into a mass And the clods stick together?
Job 38:38
When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
"Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, Or satisfy the appetite of young lions,
Job 38:39
Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
When they crouch in their hiding places, And lie in wait in their lair?
Job 38:40
When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
"Who prepares feed for the raven When its young cry to God, And wander about without food?
Job 38:41
Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.
