Contextual Overview

11 Then David gave his son Solomon the plans for building the Temple and the courtyard around the Temple. They included its buildings, its storerooms, its upper rooms, its inside rooms, and the place where the people's sins were removed. 12 David gave him plans for everything he had in mind: the courtyards around the Lord 's Temple and all the rooms around it, the Temple treasuries, and the treasuries of the holy items used in the Temple. 13 David gave Solomon directions for the groups of the priests and Levites. David told him about all the work of serving in the Temple of the Lord and about the items to be used in the Temple service 14 that were made of gold or silver. David told Solomon how much gold or silver should be used to make each thing. 15 David told him how much gold to use for each gold lampstand and its lamps and how much silver to use for each silver lampstand and its lamps. The different lampstands were to be used where needed. 16 David told how much gold should be used for each table that held the holy bread and how much silver should be used for the silver tables. 17 He told how much pure gold should be used to make the forks, bowls, and pitchers and how much gold should be used to make each gold dish. He told how much silver should be used to make each silver dish 18 and how much pure gold should be used for the altar of incense. He also gave Solomon the plans for the chariot of the golden creatures that spread their wings over the Ark of the Agreement with the Lord . 19 David said, "All these plans were written with the Lord guiding me. He helped me understand everything in the plans." 20 David also said to his son Solomon, "Be strong and brave, and do the work. Don't be afraid or discouraged, because the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or leave you until all the work for the Temple of the Lord is finished.

David: He gave him an ichnograph of the building, with elevations, sections and specifications of every part; and all this he himself received by inspiration from God himself - 1 Chronicles 28:12, and 1 Chronicles 28:19, just as Moses had received the plan of the tabernacle.

the pattern: 1 Chronicles 28:19, Exodus 25:40, Exodus 26:30, Exodus 39:42-43, 2 Chronicles 3:3, Ezekiel 43:10-11, Hebrews 8:5

the porch: 1 Kings 6:3, 2 Chronicles 3:4, Ezekiel 40:8, Ezekiel 40:9, Ezekiel 40:15, Ezekiel 40:48-49,

the treasuries: גנזכיו, ganzakkaiv̀. The word גנזך, ganzach, is supposed to be not Hebrew, but Persian; in which language we have gng, ganj, a granary, a hidden treasure, and rwgng, gunjoor, and hnygng, gunjineh, a treasure, treasury, or barn. It may, however, be a Chaldee form of the Hebrew גנז, genez, (from גנז, genaz, to treasure up); the ך being merely formative, as in דך, dech, אלך, illaich, and other Chaldee words. 1 Chronicles 9:26-29, 1 Chronicles 26:20-27, Luke 21:1

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch,.... The breadth, and length, and height of it, which was to be placed at the east end of the temple, and was the entrance into it:

and, of the houses thereof; the holy place, and the most holy, which latter is called the greater house, 2 Chronicles 3:5,

and of the treasures; where things belonging to the temple were laid up, the priests' vestments, and other things:

and of the upper chambers; where the priests lay or met for conversation, Jeremiah 35:2.

and of the inner parlours thereof; where the priests ate of the holy things; all these seem to he buildings against the wall of the temple round about, 1 Kings 6:5

and of the place of the mercy seat: the holy of holies, where that, with the cherubim over it, and the ark under it, were placed.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Compare 1 Chronicles 28:19. As God had revealed to Moses the pattern of the tabernacle Exodus 26:0; Exodus 27:0, so He had made known by revelation to David the pattern of the temple and its furniture. This pattern, which consisted of a set of directions in writing, David now handed over to Solomon.

The houses - The “holy place” and the “holy of holies “ - called respectively “the house” and the “inner house” 1 Kings 6:17, 1 Kings 6:27, and 2 Chronicles 3:5, 2 Chronicles 3:8 “the greater house” and “the most holy house.”

The upper chambers - Compare 2 Chronicles 3:9 note.

The inner parlours - The small rooms of the “lean-to” (1 Kings 6:5 note), entered one from another.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 1 Chronicles 28:11. David gave to Solomon - the pattern — He gave him an ichnograph of the building, with elevations, sections, and specifications of every part; and all this he received by inspiration from God himself, (see 1 Chronicles 28:12; 1 Chronicles 28:19,) just as Moses had received the plan of the tabernacle.

The treasuries thereof — גנזכיו ganzaccaiv. The word גנזך ganzach is not Hebrew, but is supposed to be Persian, the same word being found in Esther 3:9. In this tongue we have the word [Persian] ganj, a granary, a hidden treasure, and [Persian] gunjoor, and [Persian] gunjineh, a treasure, treasury, or barn. Parkhurst supposes that it is compounded of גנז ganaz, to treasure up, and זך zach, pure; a treasury for the most precious things.
