Eli and his two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, served as the priests of God there. When Elkanah sacrificed, he passed helpings from the sacrificial meal around to his wife Peninnah and all her children, but he always gave an especially generous helping to Hannah because he loved her so much, and because God had not given her children. But her rival wife taunted her cruelly, rubbing it in and never letting her forget that God had not given her children. This went on year after year. Every time she went to the sanctuary of God she could expect to be taunted. Hannah was reduced to tears and had no appetite.

3 Now this man would go up from his city (C1)yearly (C2)to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in (C3)Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the LORD there.

5 But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the Lord had shut up her womb. 5 But to Hannah he would give a double portion,[e] because he loved Hannah, though Yahweh had closed her womb. 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb.[a] 5 But Elkanah always gave a special share of the meat to Hannah, because he loved Hannah and because the Lord had kept her from having children. 5 But he would give a double portion to Hannah, because he especially loved her. Now the Lord had not enabled her to have children. 5 But to Hannah he would give a double portion, because he loved Hannah, (C1)but the LORD had (F1)given her no children.5 but to Hannah he would give a double portion, because he loved Hannah, (C1)but the LORD had closed her womb.5 But vnto Hannah he gaue a worthy portion: for he loued Hannah, and the Lorde had made her barren.5 but to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, (C1)but Yahweh had closed her womb. 5 But he gave Hannah even more, because he loved Hannah very much, even though the Lord had kept her from having children of her own. 5 but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved Hannah, even though Adonai had kept her from having children.

5 but to Hannah he used to give a double portion, for he loved Hannah; but Jehovah had shut up her womb. 5 Elkanah always gave an equal share[a] of the food to Hannah. He did this because he loved her very much, even though the Lord had not let Hannah have any children.5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah; but the LORD had shut up her womb. 5 And even though he loved Hannah very much he would give her only one share, because[a] the Lord had kept her from having children. 5 And to Hannah he gave one double portion, for he loved Hannah. And Jehovah had shut up her womb.5 But vnto Anna he gaue one deale heuely, for he loued Anna. Neuertheles the LORDE had closed hir wombe, 5 but unto Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but Jehovah had shut up her womb. 5 But to Hannah he gave one part, though Hannah was very dear to him, but the Lord had not let her have children.5 But vnto Hanna he gaue a worthy portion: for he loued Hanna, & the Lorde had made her barren.5 but unto Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but the LORD had shut up her womb.5 But vnto Hannah he gaue a worthy portion: (for he loued Hannah, but the Lord had shut vp her wombe. 5 And to Anna he gave a prime portion, because she had no child, only Helkana loved Anna more than the other; but the Lord had closed her womb. 5 but unto Hannah he gave a double portion: for he loved Hannah, but the LORD had shut up her womb. 5 But to Hannah he would give a double portion(a), for he loved her even though the LORD had closed her womb.5 forsothe he yaf soreufuly o part to Anna, for he louyde Anna; forsothe the Lord hadde closid hir wombe.5 and to Hannah he giveth a certain portion -- double, for he hath loved Hannah, and Jehovah hath shut her womb;5 but to Hannah he gave a special portion; for he loved Hannah, but Yahweh had shut up her womb.5 But to Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah; but the LORD had rendered her barren.5 but to Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but Yahweh had shut up her womb. 5 But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although the LORD had closed her womb. 5 And though he loved Hannah, he would give her only one choice portion[b] because the Lord had given her no children. 5 But he would give twice as much to Hannah, for he loved Hannah. But the Lord had made it so she could not have children. 5 but to Hannah he gave a double portion,[b] because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. 5 and, unto Hannah, used he to give one portion, - howbeit, Hannah, he loved, although, Yahweh, had restrained her from having children.5 But to Anna he gave one portion with sorrow, because he loved Anna. And the Lord had shut up her womb.5 and, although he loved Hannah, he would give Hannah only one portion, because the LORD had closed her womb.5 and he gives a certain portion to Hannah—double, for he has loved Hannah, and YHWH has shut her womb;5 but to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, (C1)but the LORD had closed her womb.6 Her rival would taunt her severely just to provoke her, because the Lord had kept Hannah from conceiving. 6 Her rival provoked her sore, to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.

6 And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the Lord had shut up her womb. 6 (Now her rival wife would provoke her severely in order to upset her because Yahweh had closed her womb.) 6 And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. 6 Peninnah would tease Hannah and upset her, because the Lord had made her unable to have children. 6 Her rival wife used to upset her and make her worry, for the Lord had not enabled her to have children. 6 Hannah's rival (C1)provoked her bitterly, to irritate and embarrass her, because the LORD had (F1)left her childless.6 Her rival, moreover, (C1)would provoke her bitterly to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb.6 And her aduersarie vexed her sore, forasmuch as she vpbraided her, because the Lorde had made her barren.6 Her rival, however, (C1)would provoke her bitterly to irritate her because Yahweh had closed her womb.

6 Peninnah liked to make Hannah feel miserable about not having any children, 6 Her rival taunted her and made her feel bad, because Adonai had kept her from having children.

6 And her adversary provoked her much also, to make her fret, because Jehovah had shut up her womb.

Peninnah Upsets Hannah

6 Peninnah always upset Hannah and made her feel bad because the Lord had not made her able to have children.6 And her rival also taunted her sorely to make her fret because the LORD had shut up her womb. 6 Peninnah, her rival, would torment and humiliate her, because the Lord had kept her childless. 6 And her rival provoked her even to vexation, so as to make her tremble, because Jehovah had shut up her womb.6 & hir aduersary cast her in the tethe with hir vnfrutefulnes, because the LORDE had closed hir wombe: 6 And her rival provoked her sore, to make her fret, because Jehovah had shut up her womb. 6 And the other wife did everything possible to make her unhappy, because the Lord had not let her have children;6 And her enemie [Phenenna] vexed her sore, forasmuche as she vpbrayded her, because the Lord had made her barren.6 And her rival vexed her sore, to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.6 And her aduersary also prouoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the Lord had shut vp her wombe.) 6 For the Lord gave her no child in her affliction, and according to the despondency of her affliction; and she was dispirited on this account, that the Lord shut up her womb so as not to give her a child. 6 And her rival provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb. 6 Because the LORD had closed Hannah's womb, her rival would provoke her and taunt her viciously.6 And hir enemy turmentide `hir, and angwischide greetly, in so myche that sche vpbreidide, that the Lord hadde closid hir wombe.6 and her adversity hath also provoked her greatly, so as to make her tremble, for Jehovah hath shut up her womb.6 And her rival provoked her intensely, to make her fret, because Yahweh had shut up her womb.6 And her adversary also provoked her greatly, to make her fret, because the LORD had made her barren.6 Her rival provoked her sore, to make her fret, because Yahweh had shut up her womb. 6 And her rival also provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the LORD had closed her womb. 6 So Peninnah would taunt Hannah and make fun of her because the Lord had kept her from having children. 6 Peninnah would try to make her very angry, because the Lord would not let her have children. 6 Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. 6 And her rival used even to cause her great vexation, for the sake of provoking her, - because Yahweh had restrained her from having children.6 Her rival also afflicted her, and troubled her exceedingly, insomuch that she upbraided her, that the Lord had shut up her womb:6 And her rival used to provoke her sorely, to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb.6 and her rival has also provoked her greatly, so as to make her tremble, for YHWH has shut up her womb.6 Her rival, however, (C1)would provoke her bitterly to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb.7 Year after year, when she went up to the Lord’s house,(C1) her rival taunted her in this way. Hannah would weep and would not eat. 7 [as] he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
