² Jonathan said to him, “No, you won’t die. Listen, my father doesn’t do anything, great or small, without telling me.^(F1) So why would he hide this matter from me? This can’t be true.”

² And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will shew it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so. ² And he said to him, "Far from it! You will not die! Look, my father does not do^[b] anything large or small unless he reveals it to me.^[c] Why should my father hide this thing or anything from me?" ² And he said to him, "Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. And why should my father hide this from me? It is not so."

² Jonathan answered, "No! You won't die! See, my father doesn't do anything great or small without first telling me. Why would he keep this from me? It's not true!"

² Jonathan said to him, "By no means are you going to die! My father does nothing large or small without making me aware of it. Why would my father hide this matter from me? It just won't happen!"² Jonathan said to him, "Far from it! You shall not die. My father does nothing ^(F1)important or insignificant without telling me. So why would he hide this thing from me? It is not so!"² He said to him, "Far from it, you shall not die! Behold, my father does nothing either great or small ^(F1)without informing me. So why would my father hide this thing from me? It is not so!"² And he sayde vnto him, God forbid, thou shalt not die: beholde, my father will do nothing great nor small, but he will shewe it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? he will not doe it.² And he said to him, "Far from it, you shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without revealing it in my ear. So why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so!"

² "My father can't be trying to kill you! He never does anything without telling me about it. Why would he hide this from me? It can't be true!" ² Y'honatan replied, "Heaven forbid! You're not going to die! Look, my father does nothing important or unimportant without telling me first; so why should my father hide this from me? It just won't happen!"

² And he said to him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, and not apprise me; and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.

² Jonathan answered, "That can't be true! My father isn't trying to kill you. My father doesn't do anything without first telling me. It doesn't matter how important it is, my father always tells me. Why would my father refuse to tell me that he wants to kill you? No, it is not true!"² And Jonathan said to him, God forbid; you shall not die; behold, my father does nothing either great or small which he does not reveal to me; and why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so.

² Jonathan answered, "God forbid that you should die! My father tells me everything he does, important or not, and he would not hide this from me. It just isn't so!"² And he said to him, Far be it! You shall not die. Behold, my father shall not do anything great or small, and not reveal it to my ear. And why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so .² He sayde vnto him: God forbyd, thou shalt not dye. Beholde, my father doth nothinge, nether greate ner small, but he sheweth it before myne eares. Wherfore shulde my father the hyde this fro me? It shal not be so. ² And he said unto him, Far from it; thou shalt not die: behold, my father doeth nothing either great or small, but that he ^[a]discloseth it unto me; and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so. ² And he said to him, Far be the thought: you will not be put to death: see, my father does nothing, great or small, without giving me word of it: would he keep this secret from me? This cannot be true!”² And Jonathas seide to hym, Fer be it fro thee, thou schalt not die, for my fadir schal not do ony thing greet ether litil, `no but he schewe firste to me; therfor my fadir kepte preuy fro me this word oneli, forsothe it schal not be.<sup>2</sup> And he saith to him, `Far be it! thou dost not die; lo, my father doth not do anything great or small and doth not uncover mine ear; and wherefore doth my father hide from me this thing? this [thing] is not.'² And he said to him, Far from it; you shall not die: look, my father does nothing either great or small, but that he discloses it to me; and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.² And he said to him, Far be it from thee; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing, either great or small, but that he will show it to me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it [is] not [so].² He said to him, Far from it; you shall not die: behold, my father does nothing either great or small, but that he discloses it to me; and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so. ² So Jonathan said to him, "By no means! ² "That's not true!" Jonathan protested. "You're not going to die. He always tells me everything he's going to do, even the little things. I know my father wouldn't hide something like this from me. It just isn't so!" ² Jonathan said to him, "Far from it, you will not die. See, my father does nothing big or small without telling me about it. So why should my father hide this from me? It is not so!" ² He said to him, "Far from it! You shall not die. My father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me; and why should my father hide this from me? Never!" ² And he said unto him - Far be it! thou shalt not die. Lo! my father doeth nothing, great or small, without unveiling mine ear, - wherefore, then, should my father hide from me, this thing? There is, nothing, in this. ² And he said to him: (God forbid, thou shalt not die: for my father will do nothing, great or little, without first telling me: hath then my father hid this word only from me? no, this shall not be.² And he said to him, "Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me; and why should my father hide this from me? It is not so."² And he says to him, "Far be it! You do not die; behold, my father does not do anything great or small and does not uncover my ear; and why does my father hide this thing from me? This [thing] is not."

² "Nothing," said Jonathan. "You've done nothing wrong. And you're not going to die. Really, you're not! My father tells me everything. He does nothing, whether big or little, without confiding in me. So why would he do this behind my back? It can't be."² He said to him, "Far from it, you shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small ^(F1)without disclosing it to me. So why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so!"

³ But David said, “Your father certainly knows that I have found favor with you. He has said, ‘Jonathan must not know of this, or else he will be grieved.’” David also swore, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”^(C1)

³ And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death. ³ Then David took an oath^[d] again and said, "Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he thought, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he worry.' But as Yahweh lives^[e] and as your soul lives,^[f] surely there is merely a step between me and death!" ³ But David vowed again, saying, "Your father knows well that ^(b)I have found favor in your eyes, and he thinks, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.' But truly, ^(c)as the Lord lives and ^(d)as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death."

³ But David took an oath, saying, "Your father knows very well that you like me. He says to himself, ‘Jonathan must not know about it, or he will tell David.' As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I am only a step away from death!"

³ Taking an oath, David again said, "Your father is very much aware of the fact that I have found favor with you, and he has thought, ‘Don't let Jonathan know about this, or he will be upset.' But as surely as the Lord lives and you live, there is about one step between me and death!" ³ But David ^(C1)vowed again, saying "Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your sight, and he has said, 'Do not let Jonathan know this, or he will be worried.' But truly ^(C2)as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is hardly a step between me and death."³ Yet David ^(C1)vowed again, ^(F1)saying, "Your father is well aware that I have found favor in your sight, and he has said, 'Jonathan is not to know this, otherwise he will be worried.' But indeed ^(C2)as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is ^(F2)just a step between me and death."³ And Dauid sware againe and sayd, Thy father knoweth that I haue found grace in thine eyes: therefore he thinketh, Ionathan shall not knowe it, lest he be sorie: but in deede, as the Lord liueth, and as thy soule liueth, there is but a step betweene me and death.³ Yet David ^(C1)swore again, ^(F1)saying, "Your father knows well that I have found favor in your sight, and he has said, 'Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.' But truly ^(C2)as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, there is ^(F2)hardly a step between me and death."

³ "Jonathan, I swear it's true! But your father knows how much you like me, and he didn't want to break your heart. That's why he didn't tell you. I swear by the living Lord and by your own life that I'm only one step ahead of death." ³ In response David swore, "Your father knows very well that you have made me your friend. This is why he will say, ‘Y'honatan must not know this, or he will be unhappy.' As truly as Adonai lives, and as truly as you are alive, there is only a step between me and death."

³ And David swore again and again, and said, Thy father certainly knows that I have found favour in thy sight: and he has thought, Jonathan shall not know this, lest he be grieved; but truly [as] Jehovah liveth, and [as] thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.

³ But David answered, "Your father knows very well that I am your friend. Your father said to himself, ‘Jonathan must not know about it. If he knows, he will tell David.'^[a] But as surely as you and the Lord are alive, I am very close to death."³ And David swore moreover, and said, It is because your father knows that I have found favor in your eyes; therefore he has said. Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved; but truly as the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.

³ But David answered,^[a] "Your father knows very well how much you like me, and he has decided not to let you know what he plans to do, because you would be deeply hurt. I swear to you by the living Lord that I am only a step away from death!"³ And David again swore and said, Your father has certainly known that I have found favor in your eyes; and he said, Do not let Jonathan know this, that he not be grieved. And yet, as Jehovahlives, and your soul lives, there is only a step between me and death.³ The sware Dauid agayne, and sayde: Thy father knoweth well, yt I haue founde fauoure in yi sighte, therfore shal he thynke: Ionathas shal not knowe of this, lest it greue him. Verely, as truly as the LORDE lyueth, and as truly as yi soule lyueth, there is but one steppe betwene me & death. ³ And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father knoweth well that I have found favor in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death. ³ But David took his oath again and said, Your father sees that I am dear to you; so he says to himself, Let Jonathan have no idea of this, for it will be a grief to him; but as the Lord is living, and as your soul is living, there is only a step between me and death.³ And Dauid sware againe, and sayde: Thy father knoweth that I haue found grace in thyne eyes, & therfore he thinketh, Ionathan shall not knowe it, lest he be sory: And in very deede, euen as the Lorde lyueth, and as thy soule liueth, there is but a steppe betweene me and death.³ And David swore moreover, and said: 'Thy father knoweth well that I have found favour in thine eyes; and he saith: Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved; but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.'³ And Dauid sware moreouer, and said, Thy father certeinly knoweth that I haue found grace in thine eyes, and he sayth, Let not Ionathan know this, lest he be grieued: but truely, as the Lord liueth, and as thy soule liueth, there is but a step betweene me & death. ³ And David answered Jonathan, and said, Thy father knows surely that I have found grace in thy sight, and he said, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he refuse his consent: but as the Lord lives and thy soul lives, as I said, the space is filled up between me and death. ³ And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father knoweth well that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death. ³ But David again vowed, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘Jonathan must not know of this, or he will be grieved.’ As surely as the LORD lives and as you yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”³ And eft he swoor to Dauid. And Dauid seide, Treuli thi fadir woot, that Y haue founde grace `in thin iyen, and he schal seie, Jonathas wite not this, lest perauenture he be sory; certis the Lord lyueth, `and thi soule lyueth, for, that Y seie so, Y and deeth ben departid oneli bi o degree.³ And David sweareth again, and saith, `Thy father hath certainly known that I have found grace in thine eyes, and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved; and yet, Jehovah liveth, and thy soul liveth, but -- as a step between me and death.'³ And David swore moreover, and said, Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes; and he says, Don't let Jonathan know this, or else he will be grieved: but truly as Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.³ And David swore moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thy eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he should be grieved: But truly [as] the LORD liveth, and [as] thy soul liveth, [there is] but a step between me and death.³ David swore moreover, and said, Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes; and he says, Don't let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death. ³ Then David took an oath again, and said, "Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, "Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.' ³ Then David took an oath before Jonathan and said, "Your father knows perfectly well about our friendship, so he has said to himself, ‘I won't tell Jonathan—why should I hurt him?' But I swear to you that I am only a step away from death! I swear it by the Lord and by your own soul!" ³ But David answered, "Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes. He has said, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, because it would fill him with sorrow.' But it is true. As the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is only a step between me and death." ³ But David also swore, "Your father knows well that you like me; and he thinks, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, or he will be grieved.' But truly, as the Lord lives and as you yourself live, there is but a step between me and death." ³ But David sware yet further, and said - Thy father, doth know, that I have found favour in thine eyes, therefore saith he, - Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he grieve; but, indeed, by the life of Yahweh, and by the life of thine own soul, surely there is but as it were a step betwixt me and death!³ And he swore again to David. And David said: Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, and he will say: Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved. But truly as the Lord liveth, and thy soul liveth, there is but one step (as I may say) between me and death.³ But David replied, "Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes; and he thinks, 'Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.' But truly, as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death."³ And David swears again and says, "Your father has certainly known that I have found grace in your eyes, and he says, Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he is grieved; and yet, YHWH lives, and your soul lives, but—as a step between me and death."

³ But David said, "Your father knows that we are the best of friends. So he says to himself, ‘Jonathan must know nothing of this. If he does, he'll side with David.' But it's true—as sure as God lives, and as sure as you're alive before me right now—he's determined to kill me."³ Yet David ^(C1)vowed again, ^(F1)saying, "Your father knows well that I have found favor in your sight, and he has said, 'Do not let Jonathan know this, or he will be grieved.' But truly ^(C2)as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is ^(F2)hardly a step between me and death."

⁴ Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you say, I will do for you.”

⁴ Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee. ⁴ Then Jonathan said to David, "Whatever you wish,^[g] I will do for you." ⁴ Then Jonathan said to David, "Whatever you say, I will do for you."

⁴ Jonathan said to David, "I'll do anything you want me to do." ⁴ Jonathan replied to David, "Tell me what I can do for you."⁴ Then Jonathan said to David, "Whatever you say, I will do for you."⁴ Then Jonathan said to David, "Whatever ^(F1)you say, I will do for you."⁴ Then said Ionathan vnto Dauid, Whatsoeuer thy soule requireth, that I wil do vnto thee.⁴ Then Jonathan said to David, "Whatever your soul says, I will do for you."

⁴ Then Jonathan said, "Tell me what to do, and I'll do it." ⁴ Y'honatan said to David, "Anything you want me to do for you, I'll do."

⁴ And Jonathan said to David, What thy soul may say, I will even do it for thee.

⁴ Jonathan said to David, "I will do anything you want me to do."⁴ Then Jonathan said to David, Whatever you desire, I will do for you.

⁴ Jonathan said, "I'll do anything you want."⁴ And Jonathan said to David, What your soul may say, I also will do for you.⁴ Ionathas sayde vnto Dauid: I wil do for the what so euer thy hert desyreth. ⁴ Then said Jonathan unto David, ^[b]Whatsoever thy soul ^[c]desireth, I will even do it for thee. ⁴ Then Jonathan said to David, Whatever your desire is, I will do it for you.⁴ Then sayde Ionathan vnto Dauid: Whatsoeuer thy soule desireth, that I will do vnto thee.⁴ Then said Jonathan unto David: 'What doth thy soul desire, that I should do it for thee?' ⁴ Then said Ionathan vnto Dauid, Whatsoeuer thy soule desireth, I will euen doe it for thee. ⁴ And Jonathan said to David, What does thy soul desire, and what shall I do for thee. ⁴ Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee. ⁴ Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you desire, I will do for you.”⁴ And Jonathas seide to Dauid, What euer thing thi soule schal seie to me, Y schal do to thee.⁴ And Jonathan saith to David, `What doth thy soul say? -- and I do it for thee.'⁴ Then Jonathan said to David, Whatever your soul desires, I will even do it for you.⁴ Then said Jonathan to David, Whatever thy soul desireth, I will even do [it] for thee.⁴ Then said Jonathan to David, Whatever your soul desires, I will even do it for you. ⁴ So Jonathan said to David, "Whatever you yourself desire, I will do it for you."

⁴ "Tell me what I can do to help you," Jonathan exclaimed. ⁴ Then Jonathan said to David, "I will do for you whatever you say." ⁴ Then Jonathan said to David, "Whatever you say, I will do for you." ⁴ And Jonathan said unto David, - Whatsoever thy soul shall desire, I will do for thee.⁴ And Jonathan said to David: Whatsoever thy soul shall say to me, I will do for thee.⁴ Then said Jonathan to David, "Whatever you say, I will do for you."⁴ And Jonathan says to David, "What does your soul [desire]? Command and I do it for you."

⁴ Jonathan said, "Tell me what you have in mind. I'll do anything for you."⁴ Then Jonathan said to David, "Whatever ^(F1)you say, I will do for you."

⁵ So David told him, “Look, tomorrow is the New Moon,^(C1) and I’m supposed to sit down and eat with the king.^(C2) Instead, let me go, and I’ll hide in the countryside for the next two nights.^{(F1)(C3) 5} David said to Yonatan, Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field to the third day at even.

⁵ And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even. ⁵ David said to Jonathan, "Look, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should certainly sit with the king to eat. You must send me away so that I can hide myself in the field until the third evening. ⁵ David said to Jonathan, "Behold, tomorrow is ^(e)the new moon, and I should not fail to sit at table with the king. But let me go, ^(f)that I may hide myself in the field till the third day at evening.

⁵ So David said, "Look, tomorrow is the New Moon festival. I am supposed to eat with the king, but let me hide in the field until the third evening.

⁵ David said to Jonathan, "Tomorrow is the new moon, and I am certainly expected to join the king for a meal. You must send me away so I can hide in the field until the third evening from now. ⁵ David said to Jonathan, "Behold, tomorrow is ^(C1)the New Moon observance, and I should ^(C2)sit at the table to eat the sacrificial meal with the king; but let me go, so ^(C3)that I may hide myself in the field until the third evening.⁵ So David said to Jonathan, "Behold, tomorrow is ^(C1)the new moon, and I am obligated ^(C2)to sit down to eat with the king. But let me go ^(C3)so that I may hide myself in the field until the third evening.⁵ And Dauid said vnto Ionathan, Behold, to morowe is the first day of the moneth, and I shoulde sit with the King at meate: but let me goe, that I may hide my selfe in the fieldes vnto the third day at euen.⁵ So David said to Jonathan, "Behold, tomorrow is ^(C1)the new moon, and I ought ^(C2)to sit down to eat with the king. But let me go, ^(C3)that I may hide myself in the field until the third evening.
