And he became commander over them. And there were with him (d)about four hundred men. 2 Everyone who was in trouble, or who owed money, or who was unsatisfied gathered around David, and he became their leader. About four hundred men were with him. 2 All those who were in trouble or owed someone money or were discontented gathered around him, and he became their leader. He had about four hundred men with him.2 Everyone who was suffering hardship, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him; and he became captain over them. There were about (C1)four hundred men with him.

There were men who were in some kind of trouble, men who owed a lot of money, and men who were just not satisfied with life. All kinds of people joined David, and he became their leader. He had about 400 men with him.2 And there gathered to him every man who was in distress and every man who was in debt and every man who was discontented, and he became chief over them; and there were with him about four hundred men. 2 People who were oppressed or in debt or dissatisfied went to him, about four hundred men in all, and he became their leader.2 And every man in distress, and every man who had a creditor, and every man bitter of soul, gathered themselves to him. And he became commander over them. 3 From there David went to Mizpeh of Moab where he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and mother stay with you until I know what God will do for me.” 3 David went there to Mitzpeh of Mo'av: and he said to the king of Mo'av, Please let my father and my mother come forth, [and be] with you, until I know what God will do for me.
3 And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me. 3 And David went up from there to Mizpah of Moab. He said to the king of Moab, "Please let my father and my mother stay[c] with you until I know what God will do for me."

He said to the king of Moab, "Please let my father and mother come[a] to you, until I know what God will do for me." 3 And David departed thence, to Mizpah of Moab, - and said unto the king of Moab, I pray thee, let my father and my mother dwell with you, until that I know what God will do for me.3 And David departed from thence into Maspha of Moab: and he said to the king of Moab: Let my father and my mother tarry with you, I beseech thee, till I know what God will do for me.3 And David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, "Pray let my father and my mother stay with you, till I know what God will do for me."3 And David goes from there to Mizpeh of Moab and says to the king of Moab, "Please let my father and my mother come out with you, until I know what God does for me";3-4 Then David went to Mizpah in Moab. He petitioned the king of Moab, "Grant asylum to my father and mother until I find out what God has planned for me." David left his parents in the care of the king of Moab. They stayed there all through the time David was hiding out.
3 And David went from there to Mizpah of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, "Please let my father and my mother come and stay with you until I know what God will do for me."4 So he left them in the care of the king of Moab, and they stayed with him the whole time David was in the stronghold.
4 He brought them before the king of Mo'av: and they lived with him all the while that David was in the stronghold.4 And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold. 4 So he brought them before the king of Moab,[d] and they stayed with him all the days David was in the stronghold. 4 And he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. 4 So he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him as long as David was hiding in the stronghold. 4 So he had them stay with the king of Moab; they stayed with him the whole time that David was in the stronghold. 4 Then he left them with the king of Moab; and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the (F1)stronghold.4 Then he (F1)left them with the king of Moab; and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.4 And he brought them before the King of Moab, and they dwelt with him all the while that Dauid was in the holde.4 Then he left them with the king of Moab; and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the fortress. 4 So he brought his parents to the king of Moab, and they stayed with him while David was in hiding. 4 He presented them to the king of Mo'av, and they lived with him as long as David remained in his stronghold.
4 And he brought them before the king of Moab; and they abode with him all the while that David was in the stronghold. 4 So David left his parents with the king of Moab. They stayed with the king of Moab as long as David was at the fort.4 And he left them with the king of Moab; and they dwelt with him all the time that David was in Mizpeh. 4 So David left his parents with the king of Moab, and they stayed there as long as David was hiding out in the cave.4 And he settled them before the king of Moab; and they lived with him all the days David was in the stronghold.4 And he lefte them before the kynge of ye Moabites, so that they remayned by him, as longe as Dauid was in the castell. 4 And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the stronghold. 4 And he took them to the king of Moab and they went on living with him while David was in his safe place.4 And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the whyle that Dauid kept him selfe in the holde.4 And he brought them before the king of Moab; and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the stronghold. 4 And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that Dauid was in the hold. 4 And he persuaded the King of Moab, and they dwell with him continually, while David was in the hold. 4 And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold. 4 So he left them in the care of the king of Moab, and they stayed with him the whole time David was in the stronghold.4 And he lefte hem bifor the face of the kyng of Moab; and thei dwelliden at hym in alle daies, `in whiche Dauid was in `the forselet, ether stronghold.4 and he leadeth them before the king of Moab, and they dwell with him all the days of David's being in the fortress.4 And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the stronghold.4 And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold.4 He brought them before the king of Moab: and they lived with him all the while that David was in the stronghold. 4 So he brought them before the king of Moab, and they dwelt with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. 4 So David's parents stayed in Moab with the king during the entire time David was living in his stronghold. 4 Then he left them with the king of Moab. They stayed with him all the time that David was in his safe place. 4 He left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. 4 So he set them before the king of Moab, - and they dwelt with him, all the days that David was in the fortress.4 And he left them under thc eyes of the king of Moab, and they abode with him all the days that David was in the hold.4 And he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.4 and he leads them before the king of Moab, and they dwell with him all the days of David's being in the fortress.4 Then he left them with the king of Moab; and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.
5 Then the prophet Gad(C1) said to David, “Don’t stay in the stronghold. Leave and return to the land of Judah.” So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.
5 The prophet Gad said to David, Don't stay in the stronghold; depart, and get you into the land of Yehudah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Heret.5 And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.
5 Then Gad the prophet said to David, "You should not stay in the stronghold; leave and go into the land of Judah." So David left and came to the forest of Hereth. 5 Then the prophet (e)Gad said to David, "Do not remain in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah." So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.

Then Dauid departed & came into the forest of Hareth.5 (C1)And the prophet Gad said to David, "Do not stay in the fortress; go, and enter into the land of Judah." So David went and entered into the forest of Hereth.5 One day the prophet Gad told David, "Don't stay here! Go back to Judah." David then left and went to Hereth Forest. 5 But the prophet Gad said to David, "Don't stay in the stronghold. Leave, and go to the land of Y'hudah." So David left and went to the Forest of Heret.
5 And the prophet Gad said to David, Abide not in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.
5 But the prophet Gad said to David, "Don't stay in the fort. Go to the land of Judah." So David left and went to Hereth Forest.5 And the prophet Gad said to David, Do not abide in Mizpeh; depart and go into the land of Judah. Then David departed and came into the forest of Hiziuth.
5 Then the prophet Gad came to David and said, "Don't stay here; go at once to the land of Judah." So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.5 And Gad the prophet said to David, You shall not remain in the stronghold. Go, and you come into the land of Judah. And David left and came into the forest of Hareth.5 Neuertheles the prophet Gad sayde vnto Dauid: Abyde not in the castell, but go yi waye, and come in to the londe of Iuda. Then departed Dauid, and came into the wodd of Hareth. 5 And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the stronghold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hereth.5 And the prophet Gad said to David, Do not go on living in this place but go into the land of Judah. Then David went away and came to the woodland of Hereth.5 And the prophete Gad sayde vnto Dauid: Abyde not in the hold, but depart & go into the land of Iuda. Then Dauid departed, & came into the forest Hareth.5 And the prophet Gad said unto David: 'Abide not in the stronghold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah.' Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hereth. 5 And the Prophet Gad said vnto Dauid, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Iudah. And Dauid yede forth, and cam in to the forest of Areth.5 And Gad the prophet saith unto David, `Thou dost not abide in a fortress, go, and thou hast entered for thee the land of Judah;' and David goeth and entereth the forest of Hareth.5 And the prophet Gad said to David, Don't abide in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah. So David left and went among the trees of Hereth. 5 Then the prophet Gad said to David, "Do not remain in the stronghold; leave, and go into the land of Judah." So David left, and went into the forest of Hereth.5 Then said Gad the prophet unto David - Thou must not abide in the fortress, go and get thee into the land of Judah. So David departed, and entered the forest of Hereth.5 And Gad the prophet said to David: Abide not in the hold, depart, and go into the land of Juda. And David departed, and came into the forest of Haret.5 Then the prophet Gad said to David, "Do not remain in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah." So David departed, and went into the forest of Hereth.5 And the prophet Gad says to David, "You do not abide in a fortress, go, and you have entered the land of Judah for yourself"; and David goes and enters the forest of Hareth.
5 The prophet Gad told David, "Don't go back to the cave. Go to Judah." David did what he told him. He went to the forest of Hereth.5 (C1)The prophet Gad said to David, "Do not stay in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah." So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.
6 Saul heard that David and his men had been discovered. At that time Saul was in Gibeah, sitting under the tamarisk tree(C1) at the high place. His spear was in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him.
6 Sha'ul heard that David was discovered, and the men who were with him: now Sha'ul was sitting in Gevah, under the tamarisk tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him.

6 Saul was sitting under a small tree on top of the hill at Gibeah when he heard that David and his men had been seen. Saul was holding his spear, and his officers were standing in front of him.

He was sitting under the big oak on the hill at Gibeah at the time, spear in hand, holding court surrounded by his officials. He said, "Listen here, you Benjaminites! Don't think for a minute that you have any future with the son of Jesse! Do you think he's going to hand over choice land, give you all influential jobs? Think again. Here you are, conspiring against me, whispering behind my back—not one of you is man enough to tell me that my own son is making deals with the son of Jesse, not one of you who cares enough to tell me that my son has taken the side of this, this . . . outlaw!"
