¹ And it happened when Samuel was old that ^(C1)he appointed his sons judges over Israel.^1-2 Samuel had two sons. The older one was Joel, and the younger one was Abijah. When Samuel was getting old, he let them be leaders^[a] at Beersheba.

His firstborn son was named Joel, the name of his second, Abijah. They were assigned duty in Beersheba. But his sons didn't take after him; they were out for what they could get for themselves, taking bribes, corrupting justice.

³ And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment. ³ But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after gain, they took bribes, and they perverted justice. ³ Yet his sons did not walk in his ways ^(b)but turned aside after gain. ^(c)They took bribes and perverted justice. ³ But Samuel's sons did not live as he did. They tried to get money dishonestly, and they accepted money secretly to make wrong judgments. ³ But his sons did not follow his ways. Instead, they made money dishonestly, accepted bribes, and perverted justice.³ His sons, however, did not walk in his ways, but turned aside after dishonest gain, ^(C1)took bribes, and perverted justice.

³ And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice. ³ But Samuel's sons did not live the same way he did. Joel and Abijah accepted bribes. They took money secretly and changed their decisions in court. ⁴ Then all the Zakenim of Yisra'el gathered themselves together, and came to Shemu'el to Ramah;

⁴ And all [the] elderly of Israel gather themselves together, and come to Samuel at Ramath,^4-5 Fed up, all the elders of Israel got together and confronted Samuel at Ramah. They presented their case: "Look, you're an old man, and your sons aren't following in your footsteps. Here's what we want you to do: Appoint a king to rule us, just like everybody else."

⁴ Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at ^(C1)Ramah;⁵ They said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Therefore, appoint a king to judge us the same as all the other nations have.”^(C1)

⁵ And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. ⁵ They said to him, "Look, you are old and your sons do not follow in your ways. So then appoint a king for us to judge^[a] us, like all the nations. ⁵ and said to him, "Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. ^(e)Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations." ⁵ They said to him, "You're old, and your sons don't live as you do. Give us a king to rule over us like all the other nations." ⁵ They said to him, "Look, you are old, and your sons don't follow your ways. So now appoint over us a king to lead us, just like all the other nations have."⁵ and said to him, "Look, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now ^(C1)appoint us a king to judge us and rule over us like all the other nations."⁵ and they said to him, "Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now ^(C1)appoint us a king to judge us like all the nations."⁵ And said vnto him, Beholde, thou art olde, and thy sonnes walke not in thy wayes: make vs nowe a King to iudge vs like all nations.⁵ and they said to him, "Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now ^(C1)appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations." ⁵ and said, "You are an old man. You set a good example for your sons, but they haven't followed it. Now we want a king to be our leader,^[b] just like all the other nations. Choose one for us!" ⁵ and said to him, "Look, you have grown old, and your sons are not following your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations."

⁵ and said to him, Behold, thou art become old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now appoint us a king to judge us, like all the nations. ⁵ The elders said to Samuel, "You're old, and your sons don't live right. They are not like you. Now, give us a king to rule us like all the other nations."⁵ And they said to him, Behold, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways; now give us a king to judge us like all the nations. ^5 (a)and said to him, "Look, you are getting old and your sons don't follow your example. So then, appoint a king to rule over us, so that we will have a king, as other countries have." ⁵ And they said to him, Behold, you have become old, and your sons have not walked in your ways. Now appoint a king to us, to judge us, like all the nations.⁵ & saide vnto him: Beholde, thou art waxen olde, & thy sonnes walke not in yi wayes, set a kynge now ouer vs therfore, to iudge vs, as all ye Heithe haue. ⁵ and they said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. ⁵ And said to him, See now, you are old, and your sons do not go in your ways: give us a king now to be our judge, so that we may be like the other nations.⁵ And sayd vnto him: Beholde, thou art olde, and thy sonnes walke not in thy wayes: Now therfore make vs a king to iudge vs, as all other nations [haue]⁵ And they said unto him: 'Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways; now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.'⁵ And said vnto him, Behold, thou art olde, and thy sonnes walke not in thy wayes: now make vs a King to iudge vs, like all the nations. ⁵ and they said to him, Behold, thou art grown old, and thy sons walk not in thy way; and now set over us a king to judge us, as also the other nations have. ⁵ and they said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. ⁵ “Look,” they said, “you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint a king to judge us like all the other nations.”⁵ And thei seiden to hym, Lo! thou hast wexid eld, and thi sones goen not in thi weies; ordeyne thou a kyng to vs, `that he deme vs, as also alle naciouns han.<sup>5</sup> and say unto him, `Lo, thou hast become aged, and thy sons have not walked in thy ways; now, appoint to us a king, to judge us, like all the nations.'⁵ and they said to him, Look, you are old, and your sons don't walk in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.⁵ And said to him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.⁵ and they said to him, Behold, you are old, and your sons don't walk in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. ⁵ and said to him, "Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations." ⁵ "Look," they told him, "you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have." ⁵ They said to him, "See, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Choose a king to rule over us like all the nations." ⁵ and said to him, "You are old and your sons do not follow in your ways; appoint for us, then, a king to govern us, like other nations." ⁵ and said unto him - Lo! thou, art old, and, thy sons, walk not in thy ways: Now, appoint for us a king to judge us, like all the nations.⁵ And they said to him: Behold thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: make us a king, to judge us, as all nations have.⁵ and said to him, "Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint for us a king to govern us like all the nations."⁵ and say to him, "Behold, you have become aged, and your sons have not walked in your ways; now, appoint a king to us, to judge us, like all the nations."⁵ and they said to him, "Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now ^(C1)appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations."

⁶ When they said, “Give us a king to judge us,” Samuel considered their demand wrong, so he prayed to the Lord. ⁶ But the thing displeased Shemu'el, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. Shemu'el prayed to the LORD.

⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord. ⁶ But the matter was displeasing to Samuel^[b] when they said, "Give us a king to judge^[c] us," so Samuel prayed to Yahweh. ⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." And Samuel prayed to the Lord.

⁶ When the elders said that, Samuel was not pleased. He prayed to the Lord,

⁶ But this request displeased Samuel, for they said, "Give us a king to lead us." So Samuel prayed to the Lord. ⁶ But their demand ^(F1)(C1)displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge and rule over us." So ^(C2)Samuel prayed to the LORD.⁶ But the matter was ^(F1)(C1)displeasing in the sight of Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." And ^(C2)Samuel prayed to the LORD.⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Giue vs a King to iudge vs: and Samuel prayed vnto the Lord.⁶ But the thing was ^(C1)evil in the sight of Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." And ^(C2)Samuel prayed to Yahweh.

⁶ Samuel was upset to hear the leaders say they wanted a king, so he prayed about it. ⁶ Sh'mu'el was not pleased to hear them say, "Give us a king to judge us"; so he prayed to Adonai.

⁶ And the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to Jehovah.

⁶ So the elders asked for a king to lead them. Samuel thought this was a bad idea, so he prayed to the Lord.⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said to him, Give us a king to judge us like all the nations. And Samuel prayed before the LORD. ⁶ Samuel was displeased with their request for a king; so he prayed to the Lord, ⁶ And the thing was evil in Samuel's eyes when they said, Give to us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to Jehovah.⁶ The was Samuel displeased wha they sayde: Geue vs a kynge, to iudge as. And Samuel prayed before the LORDE. ⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto Jehovah. ⁶ But Samuel was not pleased when they said to him, Give us a king to be our judge. And Samuel made prayer to the Lord.⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, geue vs a king to iudge vs: And Samuel prayed vnto the lorde.⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said: 'Give us a king to judge us.' And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. ⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Giue vs a King to iudge vs: and Samuel prayed vnto the Lord. ⁶ And the thing was evil in the eyes of Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us: and Samuel prayed to the Lord. ⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel; when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. ⁶ But when they said, “Give us a king to judge us,” their demand was displeasing in the sight of Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.⁶ And the word displeside in the iyen of Samuel, for thei hadden seid, Yyue thou to vs a kyng, that he deme vs. And Samuel preiede to the Lord.⁶ And the thing is evil in the eyes of Samuel, when they have said, `Give to us a king to judge us;' and Samuel prayeth unto Jehovah.⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to Yahweh.⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us: and Samuel prayed to the LORD.⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. Samuel prayed to Yahweh. ⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." So Samuel prayed to the LORD.

⁶ Samuel was displeased with their request and went to the Lord for guidance. ⁶ But Samuel was not pleased when they said, "Give us a king to rule over us." And Samuel prayed to the Lord. ⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to govern us." Samuel prayed to the Lord, ⁶ But the thing was displeasing in the eyes of Samuel, when they said, Give unto us a king to judge us. So Samuel prayed unto Yahweh.⁶ And the word was displeasing in the eyes of Samuel, that they should say: Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to the Lord.⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to govern us." And Samuel prayed to the LORD.⁶ And the thing is evil in the eyes of Samuel when they have said, "Give a king to us, to judge us"; and Samuel prays to YHWH.

⁶ When Samuel heard their demand—"Give us a king to rule us!"—he was crushed. How awful! Samuel prayed to God.⁶ But the thing was ^(F1)(C1)displeasing in the sight of Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." And ^(C2)Samuel prayed to the LORD.⁷ But the Lord told him, “Listen to the people and everything they say to you. They have not rejected you; they have rejected me as their king.^{(C1) 7} The LORD said to Shemu'el, Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them.
