1 And it happened when Samuel was old that (C1)he appointed his sons judges over Israel.1-2 Samuel had two sons. The older one was Joel, and the younger one was Abijah. When Samuel was getting old, he let them be leaders[a] at Beersheba.

His firstborn son was named Joel, the name of his second, Abijah. They were assigned duty in Beersheba. But his sons didn't take after him; they were out for what they could get for themselves, taking bribes, corrupting justice.

(c)They took bribes and perverted justice. 3 But Samuel's sons did not live as he did. They tried to get money dishonestly, and they accepted money secretly to make wrong judgments. 3 But his sons did not follow his ways. Instead, they made money dishonestly, accepted bribes, and perverted justice.3 His sons, however, did not walk in his ways, but turned aside after dishonest gain, (C1)took bribes, and perverted justice.

Joel and Abijah accepted bribes. They took money secretly and changed their decisions in court. 4 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and went to Samuel at Ramah.(C1)

They presented their case: "Look, you're an old man, and your sons aren't following in your footsteps. Here's what we want you to do: Appoint a king to rule us, just like everybody else."
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at (C1)Ramah;5 They said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Therefore, appoint a king to judge us the same as all the other nations have.”(C1)
5 and they said to him, Behold, you are old, and your sons don't walk in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. 5 They said to him, "Look, you are old and your sons do not follow in your ways. So then appoint a king for us to judge[a] us, like all the nations. 5 and said to him, "Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. (e)Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations." 5 They said to him, "You're old, and your sons don't live as you do. Give us a king to rule over us like all the other nations." 5 They said to him, "Look, you are old, and your sons don't follow your ways. So now appoint over us a king to lead us, just like all the other nations have."5 and said to him, "Look, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now (C1)appoint us a king to judge us and rule over us like all the other nations."5 and they said to him, "Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now (C1)appoint us a king to judge us like all the nations."5 And said vnto him, Beholde, thou art olde, and thy sonnes walke not in thy wayes: make vs nowe a King to iudge vs like all nations.5 and they said to him, "Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now (C1)appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations." 5 and said, "You are an old man. You set a good example for your sons, but they haven't followed it. Now we want a king to be our leader,[b] just like all the other nations. Choose one for us!" 5 and said to him, "Look, you have grown old, and your sons are not following your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations."
5 and said to him, Behold, thou art become old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now appoint us a king to judge us, like all the nations. 5 The elders said to Samuel, "You're old, and your sons don't live right. They are not like you. Now, give us a king to rule us like all the other nations."5 And they said to him, Behold, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways; now give us a king to judge us like all the nations. 5 (a)and said to him, "Look, you are getting old and your sons don't follow your example. So then, appoint a king to rule over us, so that we will have a king, as other countries have." 5 And they said to him, Behold, you have become old, and your sons have not walked in your ways. Now appoint a king to us, to judge us, like all the nations.5 & saide vnto him: Beholde, thou art waxen olde, & thy sonnes walke not in yi wayes, set a kynge now ouer vs therfore, to iudge vs, as all ye Heithe haue. 5 and they said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. 5 And said to him, See now, you are old, and your sons do not go in your ways: give us a king now to be our judge, so that we may be like the other nations.5 And sayd vnto him: Beholde, thou art olde, and thy sonnes walke not in thy wayes: Now therfore make vs a king to iudge vs, as all other nations [haue]5 And they said unto him: 'Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways; now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.'5 And said vnto him, Behold, thou art olde, and thy sonnes walke not in thy wayes: now make vs a King to iudge vs, like all the nations. 5 and they said to him, Behold, thou art grown old, and thy sons walk not in thy way; and now set over us a king to judge us, as also the other nations have. 5 and they said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. 5 “Look,” they said, “you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint a king to judge us like all the other nations.”5 And thei seiden to hym, Lo! thou hast wexid eld, and thi sones goen not in thi weies; ordeyne thou a kyng to vs, `that he deme vs, as also alle naciouns han.5 and say unto him, `Lo, thou hast become aged, and thy sons have not walked in thy ways; now, appoint to us a king, to judge us, like all the nations.'5 and they said to him, Look, you are old, and your sons don't walk in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.5 And said to him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.5 and they said to him, Behold, you are old, and your sons don't walk in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. 5 and said to him, "Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations." 5 "Look," they told him, "you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have." 5 They said to him, "See, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Choose a king to rule over us like all the nations." 5 and said to him, "You are old and your sons do not follow in your ways; appoint for us, then, a king to govern us, like other nations." 5 and said unto him - Lo! thou, art old, and, thy sons, walk not in thy ways: Now, appoint for us a king to judge us, like all the nations.5 And they said to him: Behold thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: make us a king, to judge us, as all nations have.5 and said to him, "Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint for us a king to govern us like all the nations."5 and say to him, "Behold, you have become aged, and your sons have not walked in your ways; now, appoint a king to us, to judge us, like all the nations."5 and they said to him, "Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now (C1)appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations."
6 When they said, “Give us a king to judge us,” Samuel considered their demand wrong, so he prayed to the Lord. 6 But the thing displeased Shemu'el, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. Shemu'el prayed to the LORD.
6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord. 6 But the matter was displeasing to Samuel[b] when they said, "Give us a king to judge[c] us," so Samuel prayed to Yahweh. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." And Samuel prayed to the Lord.
6 When the elders said that, Samuel was not pleased. He prayed to the Lord,
6 But this request displeased Samuel, for they said, "Give us a king to lead us." So Samuel prayed to the Lord. 6 But their demand (F1)(C1)displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge and rule over us." So (C2)Samuel prayed to the LORD.6 But the matter was (F1)(C1)displeasing in the sight of Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." And (C2)Samuel prayed to the LORD.6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Giue vs a King to iudge vs: and Samuel prayed vnto the Lord.6 But the thing was (C1)evil in the sight of Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." And (C2)Samuel prayed to Yahweh.
6 Samuel was upset to hear the leaders say they wanted a king, so he prayed about it. 6 Sh'mu'el was not pleased to hear them say, "Give us a king to judge us"; so he prayed to Adonai.
6 And the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to Jehovah.
6 So the elders asked for a king to lead them. Samuel thought this was a bad idea, so he prayed to the Lord.6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said to him, Give us a king to judge us like all the nations. And Samuel prayed before the LORD. 6 Samuel was displeased with their request for a king; so he prayed to the Lord, 6 And the thing was evil in Samuel's eyes when they said, Give to us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to Jehovah.6 The was Samuel displeased wha they sayde: Geue vs a kynge, to iudge as. And Samuel prayed before the LORDE. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto Jehovah. 6 But Samuel was not pleased when they said to him, Give us a king to be our judge. And Samuel made prayer to the Lord.6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, geue vs a king to iudge vs: And Samuel prayed vnto the lorde.6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said: 'Give us a king to judge us.' And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Giue vs a King to iudge vs: and Samuel prayed vnto the Lord. 6 And the thing was evil in the eyes of Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us: and Samuel prayed to the Lord. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel; when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. 6 But when they said, “Give us a king to judge us,” their demand was displeasing in the sight of Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.6 And the word displeside in the iyen of Samuel, for thei hadden seid, Yyue thou to vs a kyng, that he deme vs. And Samuel preiede to the Lord.6 And the thing is evil in the eyes of Samuel, when they have said, `Give to us a king to judge us;' and Samuel prayeth unto Jehovah.6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to Yahweh.6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us: and Samuel prayed to the LORD.6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. Samuel prayed to Yahweh. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." So Samuel prayed to the LORD.
6 Samuel was displeased with their request and went to the Lord for guidance. 6 But Samuel was not pleased when they said, "Give us a king to rule over us." And Samuel prayed to the Lord. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to govern us." Samuel prayed to the Lord, 6 But the thing was displeasing in the eyes of Samuel, when they said, Give unto us a king to judge us. So Samuel prayed unto Yahweh.6 And the word was displeasing in the eyes of Samuel, that they should say: Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to the Lord.6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to govern us." And Samuel prayed to the LORD.6 And the thing is evil in the eyes of Samuel when they have said, "Give a king to us, to judge us"; and Samuel prays to YHWH.
6 When Samuel heard their demand—"Give us a king to rule us!"—he was crushed. How awful! Samuel prayed to God.6 But the thing was (F1)(C1)displeasing in the sight of Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." And (C2)Samuel prayed to the LORD.7 But the Lord told him, “Listen to the people and everything they say to you. They have not rejected you; they have rejected me as their king.(C1) 7 The LORD said to Shemu'el, Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them.
