David Anointed King of All Israel

¹ Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, and said, "Look, we are your bone and flesh.

¹ Then came all the tribes of Israel unto David, in Hebron, - and spake, saying - Behold us! thy bone and thy flesh, we are.

In time past when Saul was our king, you were the one who really ran the country. Even then God said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel and you'll be the prince.'"

David King over All Israel

^1 (C1)Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and ^(F1)said, "Behold, we are ^(C2)your bone and your flesh.² Even while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led us out to battle and brought us back.^(C1) The Lord also said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will be ruler over Israel.’”

² Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the Lord said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel. ² For some time,^[b] when Saul was king over us, you were leading Israel in and out.^[c] Yahweh had said to you, ‘You shall be the shepherd of my people Israel, and you will be the leader over Israel.'" ² In times past, when Saul was king over us, ^(c)it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the LORD said to you, '^(C2)You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ^(C3)a leader over Israel.'"² And in time past when Saul was our King, thou leddest Israel in and out: and the Lord hath sayde to thee, Thou shalt feede my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captaine ouer Israel.² "Previously, when Saul was king over us, ^(C1)you were the one who led out and brought in Israel; and Yahweh said to you, '^(C2)You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ^(C3)a ruler over Israel.'" ² Even when Saul was king, you led our nation in battle. And the Lord promised that someday you would rule Israel and take care of us like a shepherd." ² In the past, when Sha'ul was king over us, it was you who led Isra'el's military campaigns; and Adonai said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Isra'el, and you will be chief over Isra'el.'"

² Even aforetime, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel; and Jehovah said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be prince over Israel. ² Even when Saul was our king, you were the one who led us into battle. And you were the one who brought Israel back home from war. The Lord himself said to you, ‘You will be the shepherd of my people, the Israelites. You will be the ruler over Israel.'"² Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel; and the LORD said to you, You shall feed my people Israel, and you shall be a ruler over my people Israel. ² In the past, even when Saul was still our king, you led the people of Israel in battle, and the Lord promised you that you would lead his people and be their ruler." ² Both yesterday and the day before, when Saul was king over us, you were he who led out and brought in Israel. And Jehovah said to you, You shall shepherd My people Israel, and you shall be for a leader over Israel.² And afore tyme wha Saul was kynge ouer vs, thou leddest Israel out and in. And the LORD said to you, '^(C2)You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ^(C3)a ruler over Israel.'"

³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron. King David made a covenant with them^(C1) at Hebron in the Lord’s presence, and they anointed David king over Israel.

³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the Lord: and they anointed David king over Israel. ³ All the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant^[d] with them at Hebron in the presence of Yahweh; then they anointed David as king over Israel. ³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, ^(e)and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron ^(f)before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.

³ So all the elders of Israel came to King David at Hebron, and he made an agreement with them in Hebron in the presence of the Lord. Then they poured oil on David to make him king over Israel.

³ When all the leaders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, King David made an agreement with them in Hebron before the Lord. They designated David as king over Israel. ³ So all the elders (tribal leaders) of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David ^(C1)made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD; and ^(C2)they anointed him king over Israel.³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David ^(C1)made a covenant with them before the LORD in Hebron; then ^(C2)they anointed David king over Israel.³ So all the Elders of Israel came to the King to Hebron: and King Dauid made a couenant with them in Hebron before the Lorde: & they anoynted Dauid King ouer Israel.³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David ^(C1)cut a covenant with them in Hebron before Yahweh; then ^(C2)they anointed David king over Israel.

³ During the meeting, David made an agreement with the leaders and asked the Lord to be their witness. Then the leaders poured olive oil on David's head to show that he was now the king of Israel. ³ So all the leaders of Isra'el came to the king in Hevron, and King David made a covenant with them in Hevron in the presence of Adonai. Then they anointed David king over Isra'el.

³ And all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a covenant with them in Hebron before Jehovah; and they anointed David king over Israel.

³ So all the leaders of Israel came to meet with King David at Hebron. And kynge Dauid made a couenaunt with them at Hebron before ye LORDE. ³ All the leaders of Israel met with King David at Hebron, and the king made a treaty with them in the presence of God. And so they anointed David king over Israel.³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David ^(C1)made a covenant with them before the LORD at Hebron; then ^(C2)they anointed David king over Israel.

David Conquers Jerusalem

⁶ The king and his men marched to Jerusalem against the Jebusites^(C1) who inhabited the land. The Jebusites had said to David: “You will never get in here. Even the blind and lame can repel you” thinking, “David can’t get in here.”

⁶ The king and his men went to Yerushalayim against the Yevusi, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, Except you take away the blind and the lame, you shall not come in here; thinking, David can't come in here.

⁶ And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither.

The Capture and Growth of Jerusalem

⁶ The king and his men went to Jerusalem, to the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land. They said to David, "You will not come here, for even the blind and the lame can turn you back, saying, ‘David cannot come here.'"

^6 (j)And the king and his men went to Jerusalem ^(k)against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who said to David, "You will not come in here, but the blind and the lame will ward you off"—thinking, "David cannot come in here."

⁶ When the king and his men went to Jerusalem to attack the Jebusites who lived there, the Jebusites said to David, "You can't get inside our city. Even the blind and the crippled can stop you." They thought David could not enter their city.

David Occupies Jerusalem

⁶ Then the king and his men advanced to Jerusalem against the Jebusites who lived in the land. The Jebusites said to David, "You cannot invade this place! Even the blind and the lame will turn you back, saying, ‘David cannot invade this place!'"

How David Captured Jerusalem

⁶ The Jebusites lived in Jerusalem, and David led his army there to attack them. The Jebusites did not think he could get in, so they told him, "You can't get in here! We could run you off, even if we couldn't see or walk!"

⁶ The king and his men went to Yerushalayim to attack the Y'vusi, the inhabitants of that region. They taunted David, "You won't get in here! Even the blind and the lame could fend you off!" — in other words, they were thinking, "David will never get in here."

⁶ And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land; and they spoke to David, saying, Thou shalt not come in hither, but the blind and the lame will drive thee back; as much as to say, David will not come in hither.

David Captures Jerusalem

⁶ The king and his men went to fight against the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. The Jebusites said to David, "You cannot come into our city.^[b] Even our blind and crippled people can stop you." (They said this because they thought that David would not be able to enter into their city.

⁶ And King David and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, You shall not come in here, except you destroy both the blind and the lame; and they said, David cannot come in here.

^6 (c)The time came when King David and his men set out to attack Jerusalem. The Jebusites, who lived there, thought that David would not be able to conquer the city, and so they said to him, "You will never get in here; even the blind and the crippled could keep you out."

⁶ And the king and his men went to Jerusalem, to the Jebusites, those dwelling in the land. And one spoke to David, saying, You shall not come in here except the blind and the lame will turn you away, saying, David cannot come in here.

⁶ David then led his men to Jerusalem to fight against the Jebusites, the original inhabitants of the land who were living there. The Jebusites taunted David, saying, "You'll never get in here! Even the blind and lame could keep you out!" For the Jebusites thought they were safe.

David Takes Jerusalem

⁶ Now the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the people living in the land. They said to David, "You will not come here. Even those who cannot see or walk could stop you." They thought that David could not come here.
