Contextual Overview

1Now the word of the LORD came to Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha, saying, 2"Because I exalted you [Baasha] from the dust and made you leader over My people Israel, and you walked in the way of Jeroboam and made My people Israel sin, provoking Me to anger with their sins [of idol worship], 3behold, I am going to sweep away Baasha and his household (family), and I will make your house (royal line) like that of Jeroboam the son of Nebat. 4"The dogs will eat anyone belonging to Baasha who dies in the city, and the birds of the sky will eat anyone belonging to him who dies in the field." 5Now as for the rest of the acts of Baasha, what he did and his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 6Baasha slept with his fathers [in death] and was buried in Tirzah. Elah his son became king in his place. 7Moreover, the word of the LORD came against Baasha and his household through the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani, both for all the evil that Baasha did in the sight of the LORD in provoking Him to anger with the work of his hands (idolatry), in being like the house of Jeroboam, and because he [willingly] destroyed it (the family of Jeroboam). 8In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah the son of Baasha became king over Israel in Tirzah, and reigned two years.9His servant Zimri, commander of half his chariots, conspired against Elah. Now Elah was in Tirzah, getting drunk in the house of Arza, who was in charge of the [king's] household in Tirzah. 10Then Zimri came in and struck and killed Elah in the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, and became king in his place.

In the twenty: Baasha began to reign in the third year of Asa, and reigned 24 years; yet he died and was succeeded by Elah in the 26th year of Asa; and, in like manner, Elah, who began to reign in the 26th year of Asa, and was killed in the 27th, is said to have reigned two years. Thus it is evident that a part of a year is calculated as a whole year. In the Chinese annals, the whole year in which a king dies is ascribed to his reign, the years of the succeeding king being reckoned only from the beginning of the following year. 1 Kings 16:8

Reciprocal: 1 Kings 14:17 - Tirzah 1 Kings 15:32 - there was war 1 Kings 15:33 - twenty and four years 1 Kings 16:6 - Elah 1 Kings 16:15 - seven 1 Kings 16:21 - divided 1 Kings 16:23 - twelve years 2 Kings 15:14 - Tirzah 2 Kings 15:23 - and reigned two years 2 Kings 21:19 - two years Proverbs 28:2 - the transgression

Gill's Notes on the Bible

In the twenty sixth year of Asa king of Judah began Elah the son of Baasha to reign over Israel in Tirzah, two years. Not complete, for he died in the twenty seventh of Asa, 1 Kings 16:10 he reigned just the time that Nadab the son of Jeroboam did, 1 Kings 15:25.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Two years - i. e., More than one year, or, at any rate, some portion of two distinct years (compare 1 Kings 16:10).
