THE MESSAGE
But King Ahaz didn't learn his lesson—at the very time that everyone was turning against him, he continued to be against God ! He offered sacrifices to the gods of Damascus. He had just been defeated by Damascus; he thought, "If I worship the gods who helped Damascus, those gods just might help me, too." But things only went from bad to worse: first Ahaz in ruins and then the country. He cleaned out The Temple of God of everything useful and valuable, boarded up the doors of The Temple, and then went out and set up pagan shrines for his own use all over Jerusalem. And not only in Jerusalem, but all over Judah—neighborhood shrines for worshiping any and every god on sale. And was God ever angry!
New American Standard Bible (1995)
Now in the time of his distress this same King Ahaz became yet more unfaithful to the LORD.

Contextual Overview

16 At that same time did king Ahaz send vnto the kinges of the Assyrians, to haue helpe of them. 17 And the Edomites came againe, and slue some of Iuda, and caryed away captiues. 18 And the Philistines inuaded the cities in the lowe countrey, and toward the south of Iuda: and toke Bethsames, and Aialon, and Gederoth, and Socho with the townes longing thereto, and Thimna with the townes of the same, Gimso and the townes thereof, and dwelt there. 19 For the Lorde brought Iuda lowe, because of Ahaz king of Iuda, which made Iuda naked, & transgressed sore against the Lorde. 20 And Thilgath Pilneser king of the Assyrians came vpon him, and troubled him rather then strengthed him. 21 For Ahaz toke away a portion out of the house of the Lorde, and out of the kinges house, and out of the lordes houses, and gaue vnto the king of the Assyrians: and yet it helped him not. 22 And in the very time of his tribulation, did king Ahaz trespasse yet more against the Lorde. 23 For he offered vnto the gods of them of Damascon, which beat him: and he sayd, Because the gods of the kinges of Syria helpe them, therefore wyll I offer to them, that they may helpe me also: But they were his destruction, and the destruction of all Israel. 24 And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God, & brake them, and shut vp the doores of the house of the Lorde, and made him aulters in euery corner of Hierusalem. 25 And in all the cities of Iuda he made high places to burne incense vnto other gods, and angred the Lorde God of his fathers.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against the Lord,.... By increasing his idolatries, as appears by what he did, in imitation of what he saw at Damascus, where he had an interview with the king of Assyria, 2 Kings 16:10

this is that King Ahaz; that monster of iniquity, than whom there was none worse, nor any so bad, of all the kings of Judah.
