Contextual Overview

29 For in thee I haue discomfited an hoast of men: and with the helpe of my Lorde I haue skipped ouer the wall. 30 The way of the Lorde is a perfect way, the worde of God is tryed in the fire: he is a shielde vnto all them that put their trust in hym. 31 For who is a Lorde besides God: or who hath any strength besides our Lorde? 32 It is God that hath gyrded me with valiauntnesse of warre: and he hath made my way playne. 33 He hath made my feete lyke Hartes feete: and he hath set me vp on hygh. 34 He hath taught my handes to fyght: and myne armes to breake a bowe of steele. 35 Thou hast geuen me the shielde of thy saluation: thy ryght hande also hath helde me vp, and through thy great gentlenesse I haue increased. 36 Thou hast made me roomth inough for to go on: so that my feete haue not slypt. 37 I haue pursued myne enemies and onertaken them: neither dyd I returne backe vntyll I had destroyed them. 38 I smote them downe, and they are not able to aryse: they haue taken such a fall vnder my feete.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

I have pursued mine enemies, and overtaken them,.... Which may refer to David's pursuing the Amalekites, who overtook them and recovered all they had carried away, 1 Samuel 30:8; so Kimchi explains it;

neither did I turn again till they were consumed; for not a man escaped, save four hundred young men that rode on camels and fled,

Psalms 18:17.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

I have pursued mine enemies, and overtaken them - He had not only routed them, but had had strength to pursue them; he had not only pursued them, but he had been enabled to come up to them. The idea is that of complete success and absolute triumph.

Neither did I turn again - I was not driven back, nor was I weary and exhausted, and compelled to give over the pursuit.

Till they were consumed - Until they were all either slain or made captive, so that the hostile forces vanished. None of my enemies were left.
