Contextual Overview

1 The Lord said to Moses: 2 Send for Aaron and his sons, as well as their priestly clothes, the oil for ordination, the bull for the sin offering, the two rams, and a basket of bread made without yeast. 3 Then bring the whole community of Israel together at the entrance to the sacred tent. 4 Moses obeyed the Lord , and when everyone had come together, 5 he said, "We are here to follow the Lord 's instructions." 6 After Moses told Aaron and his sons to step forward, he had them wash themselves. 7 He put the priestly shirt and robe on Aaron and wrapped the sash around his waist. Then he put the sacred vest on Aaron and fastened it with the finely woven belt. 8 Next, he put on Aaron the sacred breastpiece that was used in learning what the Lord wanted his people to do. 9 He placed the turban on Aaron's head, and on the front of the turban was the narrow strip of thin gold as a sign of his dedication to the Lord . 10 Moses then dedicated the sacred tent and everything in it to the Lord by sprinkling them with some of the oil for ordination.

coats: The kethoneth, or coat, was made of linen; but the form of it is no where described in Scripture, except in the visionary appearance of Christ to St. John, in the form and habit of a priest (Revelation 1:13); where he is said to be וםהוהץלוםןע נןהחסח, "clothed with a garment down to the feet," which perfectly agrees with the description the Jewish writers give of it; who also say, that it had sleeves which came down to the wrist, and was tied about the neck; so that it was not unlike a long shirt. It was common to all the priests; but the tunic of the high priest was made of finer linen, or wove in a more curious manner - Exodus 28:4.

bonnets: The migbaôth, or bonnets, are described by Josephus as being like helmets of linen, one wreath being plaited and folded over another and a thin cap, suited to its shape, put over all, to prevent its unfolding.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And Moses brought Aaron's sons,.... His four sons, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation; he ordered and directed them to come there, or sent proper persons to fetch them, or from one part of the court, where they were, he might accompany them thither:

and put coats upon them, and girded them with girdles: which were made of fine linen, Exodus 39:27 and the coats being made long to reach down to the ankles, needed girdles, especially when in service, that they might perform it more expeditiously:

and put bonnets on them; which were made of fine linen also, and differed from the mitre of the high priest only in the manner of rolling up the linen:

as the Lord commanded Moses; as all the above things were made, so they were all put on, according to the directions Moses received of the Lord, who was faithful in his house, with respect to everything he enjoined him, Hebrews 3:2.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Aaron’s sons - The common priests. Nothing is said here, or in Exodus 29:7-9, of the anointing of the common priests, though it is expressly commanded in Exodus 28:41; Exodus 40:15, and is evidently implied as a fact in Leviticus 7:36; Leviticus 10:7; Numbers 3:3. It would seem that the anointing of the common priests consisted in some rite common to them and the high priest Exodus 40:15, and this was the sprinkling mentioned in Leviticus 8:30. Compare further Leviticus 10:7 with Leviticus 21:12.
